Wasteland_Audio Posted November 11, 2015 Report Posted November 11, 2015 So lets just say that if someone by chance got sent 2 identicle subs, but one of them had different ohm coils in it. How damaging would it be to one or both of the subs if they were run off strapped amps? Asking because i have a hunch that this may have happened to me (and yes i am pulling subs this weekend to check) i just want to know how serious of a problem this could be.
Smoove Posted November 11, 2015 Report Posted November 11, 2015 Simple answer is SAME FOR SAME. mixing subs is bad. Doesn't matter if the amps are strapped. you dont want one sub to see 1ohm and the other see 2ohm ( numbers are for example since you didnt state what you have). 2 Team Fi 15's v1 2 DD M5's 970amps of Alt 6th order blowthroughThe truck Blowthrough build : http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/155555-smooves-1996-chevy-ext-cab-c1500-slow-build/The 350z build : http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/170694-smooves-2003-nissan-350z/ My FB page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Smooves-Car-Audio-and-performance/719746144805343 Team Fi Audio http://www.ficaraudio.com/
Wasteland_Audio Posted November 11, 2015 Author Report Posted November 11, 2015 Sorry for not going deeper into it, I have 2 DC lv6m3's, both of which are supposed to be dual 2 ohm subs. Since i got them i've been having issues with one cone traveling much less than the other, they were each wired up to their own amp at one ohm. I attributed this to not having the right tools to gain match so i thought what the hell, i'll just strap the amps at 2 ohms and eliminate the issue, but after i strapped them i am still having the same problem. One sub is still traveling a good 1/2" to 3/4" less than the other, which is why i came to the conclusion that one sub has a higher ohm load than the other, in turn seeing less power.
OrionStang Posted November 11, 2015 Report Posted November 11, 2015 First off, measure the coils. A cheap dmm can do this for you. SMD Super Seller My Feedback Thread
Wasteland_Audio Posted November 11, 2015 Author Report Posted November 11, 2015 I'm planning on it this weekend. I just need to know if that is the case am i damaging anything by running them like that.
_paralyzed_ Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 If one sub is 1 ohm it will receive twice the power of a sub at 2 ohm. You could easily overdrive 1 sub. It's bad. Stop. It could be the box. Some subs near the port will unload more than the non port side sub. Measure with a dmm. If coils are the same, swap the subs location in the box and see if the same side has more excursion.
Jman9112 Posted November 12, 2015 Report Posted November 12, 2015 Check your wiring as well, if its a single chamber the one might just be working and pushing the other as a passive radiator if its not being powered. Ballin' on a budget.
Wasteland_Audio Posted November 29, 2015 Author Report Posted November 29, 2015 Sorry for leaving everyone hanging on this but i finally got around to checking the coils on my subs and unfortunately yes, one sub is dual 2 ohm and the other is dual 1 ohm. I guess i'll be calling sonic electronix tomorrow and finding out what it takes to get all this mess fixed... for the second time... smh.
mcfalcon Posted November 29, 2015 Report Posted November 29, 2015 Yeah well at least they are on here and can see the thread. Hope they fix it. Still learning but have started gathering.
