1980 firebird upgrade options?

I have a 1980 firebird with the old cassette player with the 2 knobs.I want to upgrade the system and install new speakers along with a amp and sub in the trunk .can I keep the stock radio for factory integration or should I install a aftermarket radio?

You could keep the factory radio just to have it there. I did an install in a 68 Firebird where we left the factory radio, did a budget Pioneer in the glove box, and ran the USB down into the cigarette ash tray for iPhone control. Really easy to do.

That is sound advice to add another HU if you want to keep that factory look. As far as sound though get a new HU for best possible sounding system. I had a good set up in the wife's 2012 Malibu off stock HU, just changed it out with a Kenwood and the system came to life. Huge difference! Just my experience, the New HU are far better than anything stock especially from that time.

So true I don't know why I didn't think about lol guess I just had a lot on my mind. But I do have a jvc single with front rear and sub pre-outs.

No offense as those could have been cool, but if you've ever used one you'd know how bad they actually sound. Might as well put RCA jacks on the ancient stocker.

I agree with hiding one in the glove box or using any processor with an input to plug into and delete the HU altogether. Unless you use FM, that is. Lots of wake boat guys going HU-less and going straight from phone or i-source into EQs or something akin to the RF360 or BitOne. Can even BT it and never plug in.

Static drops are my bag.

Hell, you could just get a bluetooth amp and be done with it!
