I have a 99 dodge ram 1500 with a factory HO 136 amp ALT. Im only running a sub amp rated around 1300-1400 RMS. I did the big 3 upgrade with royal excelence 2 AWG OFC welding cable and using same wire for amp power and ground. Voltage drop is only .05 from battery to amp input (just checked this morning) Now to my question, my PCM regulates my ALT output and on cold mornings my voltage reads 14.45 (verified with DMM) but in warmer afternoons my voltage is around 13.8 to 14. To MY EARS my subs play louder with the 14.4 volts supplied also my amp is rated at 14.4 but im not sure if .5 volts is enough to make a difference ? According to my ears it does but i know cold cabin and warm cabin will have an effect on acoustics so idk if it was the temperture or .5 volts that is making the difference or both.... can i modifiy my ALT signal wire from the PCM to make it charge at 14.4 all the time ? First thing in the morning your ears are fresh and ready to go as your day continues you hear more and more sounds plus the playing of your stereo doesnt help either. magillaru Posted January 10, 2016 Report Share Posted January 10, 2016 What he said ^ (edit: what they both said) But I highly doubt that there's an actual difference with the voltage drop you're describing. Personally, I would not do an ext reg if that's all you're dropping to and the power you're running. If you're tensioner will allow a smaller belt, that might help.....easiest option to start with. A alt that does 19 volt, but 50 amp isn't a boss. THIS. People get so concerned with voltage and in the end, it's only one small variable that is actaully impacting the power you're getting. On industrial manufacturing equipment, we run the regulator sensing wire on 24VDC power supplies all the way out to the load to monitor load voltage.
