Airborne Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 (no pics yet, left it at the shop) I woke up this morning with the urge to shoot something I haven't fired in a while, my Polish Archer 5.56 AK. I recently installed the new ALG trigger and had run something like 1k rounds through it without a problem then my ADD told me it was time to build a 300aac Ak. I sourced the parts, made some phone calls, got it built and love it. I used a Nodak Spud AK74 sidefolder receiver (Used from a bud), bulgarian stock/trunnion etc and that gun s something else. Mat from Stalking Rhino is working on ac an that screws directly on the 1x24 so this was looking like on cool little bang bang. I have a few cIrcle10 mags for the Archer and they were perfect, fit like a glove. And that brings us to today.I grabbed some mags, looked to see if they were full (with my fingers, my "AR" 300aac mags are easy to discern) a habit I picked up in the Army that served me well when my mags all held the same ammo. Found one to be a bit light and topped it off. That just so happened to be the first mag I grabbed and first checked my Zero (I'll post pics when I get it home, it's set up fucking perfect) and all was well. i pushed the target out to 75 feet and started fucking running that gun when some strange shit happened. Smoke in my face like it blew up but it didn't make fucking sense. I dropped the mag, the safety was way down by the bottom of the trigger guard and the dust cover was askew. I looked to see if the mag was empty and I saw a 300aac. Mother fucker. I didn't set aside the 300 mags and mark them because I was fucking absent minded. With the ARs' I made it a point to make the different mags lOOK different so I wouldn't have this happen. With the 300aac AK however, I was pretty sick when I finished it and that gun took a back seat to one fucked up couple months. I never got around to blowing the gun apart and duracoating it so it sits in the "notdone" rack. The mags however were never marked because I had just learned that they worked. Up until then I was using 5.45 mags and since my last 5.45 gun is waiting for a new barrel (different funny story, not my fault) so I didn't give ita second thought to take the Archer mage out for the Archer. So when you start having different caliber weapons that share a common magazine (or clip for those of you who refuse to admit the difference), MARK THE MAGS BEFORE YOU EVEN BUILD THE GUN. I was lucky that I purchased the rail or that shit would have been blown into my face.
Airborne Posted January 19, 2016 Author Report Posted January 19, 2016 Now, a 300aac round in a 5.56 is devastating. Blew the front trunnion out (again, pics tomorrow) and bent the receiver. No shit, if it weren't for the rail My face would look a little different. This is a cautionary tale, all mistakes were made by a self proclaimed professional.
3vil Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 Sketchy man, get yourself some mag bands and get things labeled
Airborne Posted January 19, 2016 Author Report Posted January 19, 2016 I know. I REALLY do. But I figured I would post this for everyone to know that even an asshole like me can screw that up. I love those bands BTW, I use a paint marker. Well, I did on all but this one.lol

Airborne Posted January 20, 2016 Author Report Posted January 20, 2016 I always wear big ass M frames when I shoot. I know it wouldn't have been enough to save my face but the eyes would be OK. It was a stupid and simple mistake that could have been way fucking worse. Like I said, I was super careful to mark my 300aac mags for my AR's but waited to mark these untill I decided I liked them and I got sick, friend shot himself, got sick and forgot all about using the 5.56 AK mags in the other gun. I sure am glad I got the top rail though, stopped the dust cover from denting my face...
