RooTxBeeR Posted February 13, 2016 Report Posted February 13, 2016 Some have probably seen this build on here and have seen me asking questions on the gear. Before I had designed a box with 3 4" aero ports, which if I remember correctly and not doing the math, was around 30-40sqin of port area. The sub was quiet. Was a dd9515j on a M4, shouldn't be that quiet. So we got a new designed made, a slot port box with near 90sqin of port area now. Just retuned the amp since he put a new alternator in. Tuned it with the -0db 40hz track, and it sounds just about the same as it did before. What am I doing wrong here? We over doubled the port area, and it sounds just as loud as it did before. My buddy now has a VERY strong electrical system so before I was always skeptical of using -3, -5, and -7.5 tracks because I knew he wouldn't have all it takes to keep voltage at a nice level. Would it make that much of a difference now? I didn't have those tracks available to me so it is sitting at -0 tuning for right now. The only changes to the system from before to now are as follows. New alternator, new box. Only difference in old box to new one, is 1.5x the port area. Tuning frequency and other variables remained the same from last design to this one. Any ideas guys? My buddy just came across the deal of a lifetime for 2 dd9515j fully CF so he is just going to beat the hell out of this thing even if he blows it, again lol. RooTxBeeR Posted February 13, 2016 Author Report Posted February 13, 2016 No, the reference I made to 2 15's, he just bought them. So if he blows this one accidentally, again, he wont have to wait for a recone. Krakin Posted February 13, 2016 Report Posted February 13, 2016 Port area shouldn't do too much for just loudness from my remembering of the equations. It affects the amount of air that can travel through the port at a given instant. Port placement will do more with loudness after getting close enough to the required port area, I think. Haven't really done much designing or research for a while to know for a fact. Krakin's Home Dipole Project http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/186153-krakins-dipole-project-new-reciever-in-rockford-science/#entry2772370 Krakin, are you some sort of mad scientist? I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . . What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself but what has drawn your attention in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears, thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener.
RooTxBeeR Posted February 13, 2016 Author Report Posted February 13, 2016 Well it is a trunk vehicle so the only way the port can go without severe testing that barely anyone has even yet to do. Is sub/port firing into the cabin. That is the only configuration we can go with. Just want to add, I had tuned with the sw lvl at 0. When we raised it, after it was tuned. When we raised it, it got to a loudness we where looking for, but I am sure it might be introducing distortion at that point. But with what I have read, turning sw lvl to max, then tuning, it would sound the same as if it was tuned and played at 0. Triticum Agricolam Posted February 13, 2016 Report Posted February 13, 2016 6" aero ports have just over 28 sq in of port each. So going from three 6" aero ports to a single 90 sq in slot port isn't really going to be any increase in port area. RooTxBeeR Posted February 13, 2016 Author Report Posted February 13, 2016 Meh, I should just make a new topic to start with. I looked back, they where 4" ports. I had just a tenth under 38sqin of port. Thats where I got, it's now over double the port area. They where 3 4" aero's. My bad guys lol Bahahahaha just realized topic says cone area, not port lolol On 11/20/2012 at 8:54 PM, AMI CUSTOMS said: Turned mine up today at a light, guy next to me his steering wheel started moving and he looked over at me like I was a magician lol. What are you shooting for for tuning and have you checked to see what you are actually getting? RooTxBeeR Posted February 13, 2016 Author Report Posted February 13, 2016 I need to look at the design I was given to get the size exactly, but I'm pretty sure it was 3.75cuft tuned to 35hz or a bit higher I believe. For loudness, no idea, nor can I test. My 2 star ivx 15s on a aq750, sounds louder than this does. I would also like to throw out, the sub barely moves at all On 11/20/2012 at 8:54 PM, AMI CUSTOMS said: Turned mine up today at a light, guy next to me his steering wheel started moving and he looked over at me like I was a magician lol.
