What size fuse for alternator power wire

Recommended Posts

This won't die.

Basic DC theory says that if you have a 140a source that it is going to have fun trying to blow a 250a fuse while your car burns down.

What theory is this? I'd love to know how the short circuit discharge current of whatever combination of batteries OP is using is limited to 140a as to not blow any larger of a fuse

im only saying it wont hurt to fuse less than the wire if you arent going to exceed the fuse on a normal basis.

Most our mono amps dont have fuses, go ahead and throw a 350 amp fuse on a sa1500 cause you have 1/0 wire going into it.

But the fuse is for the wire.......

Must be why amp manufacturer's recommend fusing to protect the wire and not the amp....

the real issue is wasting 1/0 on a charge lead from an 140 amp alt. Wire for the device, fuse for the wire. Problem solved

There are benefits to running larger wire than needed like lower resistance.

Correct me if I am wrong but we are talking about the cable that goes from the alt to the battery that is in the back of the car. There is no battery in the front. The batteries in the back have a separate fuse. Correct?

If the cable gets pinched in the middle then the short will be energized from both ends to the short. The battery will start dumping power into it. The battery fuse will blow because it can supply the 250a to blow it. The alt also is dumping power into the short. If the alt can only supply 140a and the fuse is 250a then it won't blow because there is not enough power to blow it. Normally the fuse would be what the wire is rated for if . What we are doing here is not normal. Part of the confusion is that the 1/0 is bigger than what is needed as Strange Duck stated. The 1/0 will work but we have to take all things into consideration.

Is this thread still going on?

you bet it is, and i feel like i came out with less info than when i started it. So many different answers i dont know what shit is right or wrong

Not too hard to figure it out.

i understand that not, but i'm saying there are some people giving me a certain answer and some giving me another answer, which just complicates a thread that should have been simple
