Courage juice FTW!

no your not creatin controversy its just there a lot of well educated ppl in here that know wat there talkin bout and when uneducated ppl have to come of and pretend they graduated wit a PHD in sound acoustics engineering we must step in and "politely point them in the right direction cuz we don't want misinformation spreadin around...

X2.

If I'M ever wrong, I REALLY hope someone would step in and hammer ME back into place.

The only good info...is GOOD info.

"all encompassing, 100% correct" statements are not as easily conjured as many would assume.

You better cover ALLLL your basis if you wanna say X is better than Y...cuz there's a whole lotta nay sayers (ewww I said Sayer!) outt here ready to punch holes in ideas and theories.

Welcom to da interwebz.

Here is my opinion. The bigger the sub the lower the qaulity of sound. You have to sacrifice a little of this to get more of that. I think it will keep up but it wont sound as good as 12's and 15's but it will be louder. 18's are slower than subs that are smaller than them but that dont mean that the 18's is slow. When you are dealing with 18's the only thing you should be worrying about is your eardrums.

I never said 18's are slow. All I'm really saying is that 18's dont hold a note better than a smaller woofer. Why do you think that 12's are the most popular. 18's do not sound better than 12's, they are just louder. Im talkin about sound qaulity not spl. Most audio retailers that you go to have a few 10's a few 15's but have a sh.. load of 12's. 12'' woofers are the best woofers on the market period and thats the bottom line case closed.

As a qualified and payed sound technician, I have come to this conclusion;

You sir, are full of shit.

Would you like me to go on and on with technical details, past experiences and hardline proof or can you be a good little boy, sit down, shut up and LEARN.

P.S. 12" woofers that you will find in 'the shop' are cheap to make. Why else are there so many around? HURRR, I ARE EXPERT LULZ.

Cheers,

Mick

I have seen several people ask this, and in the past, all the big systems that I saw/heard had 4 18"s and 4 8"s or 10"s to go with them, they said you had to run some smaller subs with the big ones. But that was a long time ago.

I noticed a pretty decent change going from 15"s to 12"s in terms of depth.

Maybe the newer 18"s provide more punch than the older ones did, or it is a matter of tuning. It's not a matter of how fast the beats are on the 18", it's that an 18" is not a good midbass speaker  .

I dont' know..

Well, I certainly could.

Firstly, many people use the example of not being able to keep up with the old 'kick. Right. Well, an average kick drum skin is 22inch. Right. And the average fast double kick time is around 180-210 bpm. Cool. Most people tune their kits to about a 50-70hz smack. So, an 18" transducer, capable of reproducing sound up to 200hz (usually much more with cone 'beaming') is most definately able to reproduce the sound of the kick'. In fact, it will sound the most realistic and lifelike on a low tuned system with a large diaphram transducer, as a kick drum induces sub harmonics (due to various reasons) that larger woofers handle with ease.

Now, lets look at something 100% obvious to all. If 18" transducers are so bad at sound reproduction, WHY WOULD WE, AS OPERATORS, USE ARRAYS OF THEM AT THE PERFORMANCE ITSELF. Some people just can't see the forest through the trees.

An 18" driver will faithfully reproduce sound, and will resonate far lower than a 12" or 15" counterpart. My favourite arrangement so far is 16 TASSO quad 18" bins, 8 a side. That's 64 18" drivers oscillating, and you know what? Sounds fucking fantastic. I had them bandpassed with a low cut filter at 38hz, 48db/octave Bessel. High passed at 115hz, 24db/ocatve Bessel. So these massive bins could reproduce sound from 38hz-115hz with an almost flat frequency response (after tailoring with parametric EQ's). So yes, they most certainly can 'hold a note', to use newspeak.

Also, I personally use 18" drivers with my bass guitar use. A single 18" woofer with a 2x10" box on top, sounds great. The twin 10's handle my high end slap tone (Bootsy Collins funk and Claypool slap baby!) and the big one-eight handles low frequencies. The only reason they couldn't 'hold a note' is if I took my finger off the fret, yes?

The 18" driver is simply a low frequency reproducing driver. It will get lower than most drivers of a smaller size, and depending on manufacturer, do it well. For god's sake, before people start throwing arguments around about which woofers are the best at 'some notes', LOOK AT A FREQUENCY RESPONSE CHART FOR THAT PARTICULAR WOOFER. Read it, read it again, and read it again for good measure.

Cheers,

Mick
