Dutch Holland
I'm trying to make a decision on port area (not port area per foot) from my understandings they are 2 totally different thing maybe I'm wrong. I have a psi platform 5 12 and it doent have a recommended value for port area. So is there a general number for 12s or does it even matter? alex912005
The only rule is that you're supposed to have between 12 and 16 square inches of port area per cubic foot of box volume. For example, Digital Designs recommends the max 16 square inches for their subs. My Build Log
Dutch Holland
So does port area matter. For example I use an app called box tune calculator and it gives this as a specification for when you put in information. Is it a critical number? If I'm to low will it alow me to lose controls of the cone or maybe in the other direction. To much cone control?
WalledSonic
Yes it matters. You need to keep port velocity down. Try this: After you determine port area, determine port length to get the tuning. Dutch Holland
I think we are on different pages. I'm talking about port area. I know about port area per foot. The number I'm looking for usually sits around 25 to 50. Depending on the sub itself.
alex912005
There is only one port area, the area of the port opening (the actual hole). Maybe you're talking about port volume? My Build Log
Dutch Holland
Ok let's call it port volume. How critical is that number or is it not?

All depends on cone area, xmax, and power applied. If someone gives you that 12-16 shit, they mean well, but they are likely not much more experienced than you are. There are many experienced enclosure builders here that can help you, wait for them to chime in. DLHgn
What power will you be putting to it, what will it be tuned to and what is the net volume (volume after displacement of sub, port, bracing etc.) of the enclosure?
