Burning Up Motors Question

I've heard that underpowering large subwoofers can burn it up due to air not being able to get to the coil..

How do you determine this? I'm asking because if someone has two 18D2s and they run two amps for competition, then one amp @ 2-ohms for daily, that would only be 1/4 of the power getting to the subs. Do you base it solely on excursion?

Example:

2 Fi BTL 18s D2 (since everybody seems to know them)

2 4000W amps for competition and just one for daily...

Could that potentially burn them up? I haven't seen any threads with this question.

Heh, I figured that much, but I'm wondering when it becomes dangerous and how to know.

every time you turn the stereo down you under power the sub

it depends on the box

make it too large and you rip the cone and shit up

make it too small and the cone/vc/spider don't move enough thus making the vc overheat

you heard wrong.

Even if a sub moves a little it will still move air enough to cool, and besides, there isnt enough power to heat up the coil that much anyway.

too little power cannot blow a sub, its impossible. What too little power can do is cause you to turn it up too much and play into distortion.

Distortion is not good but also cannot alone blow a sub. Its the extra heat caused by the distortion.

The setup you listed will be fine though

Ive seen it done a few times myself, but only in cases where there was an actual fire, and it heated the glue up that holds the magnets, and top plates together, and then a top plate shifts, and catches the coil

or on crappy subs where the motor is glues to the frame, not bolted, and the glue heats up, and the motor drops off and breaks

but thats about all I seen
