jonathancullen89
what happens if u put one in a box, will it ruin the subs or will they just not perform. for how cheap they are they have good xmax and specs. if i could put 6 15" in a 20cu^ft box tuned to 30hz id go FI. i just cant afford q's or bl's Quote 1992 cavalier build 1992 blazer s10 kenwood cd hifonics hfi2500d 6 soon to be 12 12" hifonics hfi12d4's shit ton-o-wire Blurred Vision Audio Team SMD feedback/refs. clicky!-
Forevrbumpn
free air is not IBsubs look good nick! liking the single 2ohm option -Drew Free air IS IB Infinite baffle is a more technical term- Imagine front wave of the speaker, and rear wave of the speaker only separated by a baffle that is infinite in size... bass is produced not based on pressure compressed in the box, but since the rear wave is canceled to your ears/hearing, you only hear the front wave sound of the speaker, meaning Bass Bass is only bass , based on phase alignment of front and rear waves, but like in a sealed box platform, you don't hear the rear wave of the speaker, just the front wave of the speaker. A ported box aligns the rear wave with the front wave based on the port Transmission lines work like this to, it delays the rear wave of the speaker to be in phase with the front wave, creating bass Quote I have a ritual called "terminator". I crouch in the shower in the "naked terminator" pose. With eyes closed I crouch for a minute and visualize either Arnie or the guy from the 2nd movie. I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy. raytard
think cutting a sub into your rear deck and not having to build a box underneath it or like was said before, and like they used to do in the old school installs, mounting them on a flat piece of mdf just mounted in the trunk its a sub designed to be used without any sort of enclosure, just a baffle separating the back wave from the front wave to eliminate cancellation they are not intended to go in boxes, be ported, be sealed, etc they dont take much power the xmax is nothing amazing and from IB setups ive heard, its nothing too spectacular, but it does have its applications, most notably just cutting a hole in the rear deck and screwing it in for a low trunk space loss install of some bass (marine subs are almost always IB, jsut because its a pita to build a box inside the hull of a boat, they're designed to have a hole cut and be screwed in Quote Build: http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/ind...hl=avalon+build monster/rockford/kicker/stinger cables, pioneer source, jbl highs/amps, kinetik/shuriken batts, iraggi alt, dei security, dc subs(atleast for now) Team DC

Noobtastic14
dang!! first i said FA and was told it was IB, now i said it was IB and it is FA? when i searched i thought the difference was the wall separating the front and back waves ex: sub sitting on a chair = FA sub in a wall between rooms = IB noted: thanks guys -Drew Quote I am a United States Military Arts and Crafts Professional. Boon
I think they generally have incredibly tight suspension to keep the cone under control. So they're not particularly efficient. They're supposed to go extremely well on the lows though. Also one of the best imaged subs I have ever heard was an infinite baffle setup fired through the armrest hole of a Honda Accord. aznboi3644
IB is no where near as loud as a proper enclosure...just saves a room and more for sq and having a flat response that gets down really deep easily. If you put an IB sub in an enclosure it'll sound like crap. Try modeling one.

They always think "cool, i dont need a box i can just put it on the floor and have bass".....<~~~~~~there was i time (a LONG time ago) i thought that too so im just as guilty. When talking subs, if they are labeled "free air" they are meant to be installed in an IB enviroment.
