Preston took the box out between Auras and XLs and grounded the speaker wires against the case- opened it up to find this

1) will this amp be good for Autorama tomorrow morning

2) what effects will it have on performance

The amp will be sent in for repair shortly but unfortunately autorama is tomorrow

esh small chance but possible... if it just got the insulation on those wires and they dont touch each other ur fine but if they are touching ur fucked... ive seen some that are way worse work due to just getting the insulation and being lucky enough to not touch but at the same time those are few. most are fucked

If you grounded the speakerwires against the case, one must assume the amp was turned on.

So one would wonder why would you do something so stupid as to disconnect your speakers when the amp is on and leave live wires dangling around..

Tis a shame you would think people would have more common sense.

Either way it's probably fucked. It might work for a few seconds but I would bet it will then thoroughly shit itself. I'm assuming the burn mark is inside the amp's case?

EDIT: Depending where in the amp that toroid is you're more or less fucked if it's shorting out.

Whether it's the power transformer or one of the output inductors if that's shorting then either the protect will kick in or the FETs will blow themselves to little pieces.

Worst case scenario, the amp has a dual power supply and you have a short between the 2 sides of the transformer... so you could get your rail voltage go up your + wire and then we get to see how well your cars electrics run on 60vdc Although that's highly unlikey... more likely is it'll just smoke like crazy if the protect doesn't save it.

Long story short, I wouldn't even put it back in the car. If you're desperate then go for it but make damn sure it's fused and be ready with a screwdriver and a fire extinguisher. There's no way in hell I would trust that to take a full power burp.

lol a dc 18 should be able to take a bit of abuse for 2 seconds. i wouldnt plan on any longer then that

we had a broken amp that did 60v on the terminals. so after a minute or so it burned the coil of a RE SR thru the cone. interesting site to see afterwards. i was at lunch when the whole ordeal happened thou

the short is one wire on the "torrid" against the case of the amp, the amp has been bumping full blast at half ohm for almost 2 days, went into thermal protect one time, and the heatsink for the mosfets are hot but weve never run one of these amps to compare....hooking up the second amp tonight at 1/2 ohm and gonna see how it does in comparison. to clarify the torrid is not shorting, just one ark the amp shut off and powered right back on so there wasnt much attention paid to it, we opened it up tonight and i (mr.p) noticed the short on the case. Anyone knowledgeable with amps please chime in on this, need to know if one broken wire on a power torrid is that big of a deal. Thanks.

and ps. i worked a 10 hour day we yanked the woofers out and drew who slept til 4pm didnt remind me to pull the rem wire.

Sounds like you just melted the insulation off the outermost layer of the toroid... meaning you got LUCKY.
