Ouch Big, that sucks big nutts man

I have a ritual called "terminator". I crouch in the shower in the "naked terminator" pose. With eyes closed I crouch for a minute and visualize either Arnie or the guy from the 2nd movie. I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy.

have you ever actually tried it.

there is a good reason why freezing you hard drive works. A lot of times why an old hard drive will fail is the internal parts becoming worn and the heads starting to make actual contact with the platters. Freezing the hard drive for an hour or so will make the metal contract enough so that the heads are lifted back off the platters and your data can be read from it. Of course, once it thaws back out, the heads will crash back on to the platters and kill it some more, so this is only a last chance soution to get important data off the drive.

I don't talk about things I can't back up with experience.

putting a hard drive in a freezer isnt going to take the virus off of it. if the virus has been removed then thats a different story

I would partition the hard drive and install another version of windows without deleting the old copy, the save what i want to on a disk or another hard drive and format everything...For myself to make it easier i store music and stuff on separate hard drive and run just windows on another. It makes it easier if a virus or problem does happen. Everything i want is already saved and unaffected.

Be careful, unless you use a good utility like Partition Magic or Disk Director, partitioning a disk will wipe it out. If you have a disk as one single partition, you have to either delete that partition to create 2 smaller ones (bye bye data) or use one of the above utilities to shrink the current partition to make room for a new one.

if you put it in the freezer it is one and done. If it doesnt work guess what? its a goner from there on out. It does work though. but not for every hard disk failure. Its really not that hard to recover the data. If you use the method I said earlier just make sure your antivirus is up to date. If you can plug in a usb drive you can do it the way i mentioned. I also would not try to partition it at all. That runs the serious risk of losing everything. even with a partioning program.

I think your best bet is to get one of the old computers out of the trash and see if it still works, if so load a good anti virus scanner and adware and spyware cleaner, I personally use AVG Free for my virus scanner from Grisoft and Ad-Aware from Lavasoft, with a free version also. Once you have that loaded, then put your bad hard drive in there along with the one in it, so you have both, boot from the good drive and run the virus scanner first then the spyware scanner next, once those are done you can use this computer for your own stuff like you used to with what data you recover off this drive, I suspect the virus just ruined your windows install and your data is still good on there, the Geek Squad people are there to make money not actually help, so more than likely theyre just going to tell you to buy all this new stuff since they are more than likely on comission... I can also help you out pointing you in the right direction for what youll need and give advise and info.

Found a wonderful Ford special in the trash.

The Hewlett-Packard's they gave away for free to employees some odd years ago.

Bad news.

They don't match.

It's a 500gig Western Digital if that helps.

FIRST

Get a picture of the lower left part of the case, where the cards stick out of the Motherboard and post those up.

More than likely this is exactly what youll need, but get some pics of the card slots so we can tell you if it will fit.
