And not all the time. It would depend if other stars were close enough, and it could take millions to billions of years for them to collide. The black holes we have seen just happen to be more visible because of their proximity to other stars and their larger mass due to the fact that they have collided with stars. It is possible that many black holes form from solitary stars that are not close enough to other stars to collide. Our earth will one day collide with our sun, if it doesnt turn to a red giant first. This will be billions of years from now.
