Whats Louder? Many Low Power or Few High?

So i'm planning out a new build and looking at a couple options but this one question keeps holding me back.

WHATS LOUDER?

Having many low power subs? Or having a few High power subs.

Example.

2 12" vs. 1 15"

or 3 10" vs 1 15"

10 10" or 4 12"

These numbers are not my ideas or real ratios ONLY FOR UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF THE IDEA.

So lets see what you have to say.

Try and post real ideas. Everything is helpful but videos, numbers, db comparisons are most valued.

cone area is king

if on the same power more cone area will pretty much always be louder

food for though, i had 3kwrms on 2 hdc 18s and switched to 4 15" sdc's and it was way louder.

I was thinking about the cone area.

i really want 2 orion 15" instead of 2 12" but they are just soo much more

now i'm thinking like 4 10" ha

I had 6 round 12s (total cone area 678.24 sq in) best legal on dash score was 149.5. Current system is 2 Square 18s (total cone area 648 sq in) best legal on dash score 153.00. Both were run on 10k rms. Box design, subs, and electrical have alot more to do with it.

Ya i've thought about squares because that large cone area but i've never really been too impressed with them. Too me at least they always sound a lil different than a circle one.

Obviously tho it is a mixture of all things like cone area box, subs, electrical etc. But you may be right about those having more weight in the end.

How did you figure your cone area tho?

Also if having more smaller speakers is better than less big speakers why don't more people have that type of setup. Steave has 4 18"s not 10 15"?

simple math. pi * (radius^2). but...you dont want to use the full radius as the whole surface of the speaker isnt exactly being used.

when in doubt, more cone area, (if powers reletively the same)
