bobonit Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 The general rule is a joke. Only meant for people who can do the proper formulas to figure the port area. Exactly. You don't use box volume when you are figuring out minimum port area. You use the Xmax and SD of the driver. Read this page: The Subwoofer DIY Page, Port Calculations Minimum Port DiameterTo calculate the minimum diameter of the port required to prevent port noises, you will also need to know the following: Xmax = maximum linear displacement (mm) Dia = Effective diameter of driver (cm) Np = number of ports Calculate the minimum port diameter from the following equations: Sd = pi*(Dia/100)^2/4 Vd = Sd*Xmax/1000 Dmin = 100*(20.3*(Vd^2/Fb)^0.25)/Np^.5 where, Dmin = minimum port diameter (cm) Note: You CAN use ports that have a smaller diameter than that given by the equation above, especially if the ports are flared at both ends. However, at higher volumes, you may notice some port noise caused by the air rushing through the ports. That general rule of so much port for such as size of box has absolutely no bearing on whether the OP will have port noise or not, which was his original question. The enclosure is not moving the air in and out of the port, the DRIVER is. /rant. 97 Maxima SE Bunch of shit going in, check out the build Build Log

OrionStang Posted November 6, 2010 Report Posted November 6, 2010 Bobonit, I disregarded the port noise question, my bad. But I do have some experience with aero's and that is where my arguement comes from, that aero's usually (not always), need less port area. SMD Super Seller My Feedback Thread

Oh, I'm sorry if it looked like I was singling you out, I was not. I was mainly responding to all the posts of "Oh, for that many cubes you need this big of a port" not you personally. Yea, any flared ports require less than the usual port area in regards to noise. Now, if you are talking about how much port area to get loud, as in regards to SPL, I'm out on that one 97 Maxima SE Bunch of shit going in, check out the build Build Log
AMI CUSTOMS Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 Just me, but in a 6 cube box I would slot port it, aeros do best in small enclosures. Robert8252 Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 I have one 6" aero on 2 cubes. If it wasn't a case of length being a issue I would have used a 8" for my 12" sub in 2 cubes. I have 14^2 of port per cube with this aero and would rather have 20-25^2. I had two 3" aeros on the previous box which was only 1.5^3 net and had a shit load of port noise because of not enough. Listen to bobonit. If you come up needed a minimum port of 10" then that's what the sub actually needs. If you want to use slot instead do the same equation then make the slot close in port area to your answer. So if you need a 10" aero. 5X5Xpi= about 78.5" of area. So a slot port to match would need to be around 20t X 3.5w for about the same port area. It's not about how much port per cube. It's about how much air your speaker will displace in it's excursion. 2013 F150 Crew Cab Old Build Log Feedback 2013 F150 Equipment - Some Awesome Stereo Sound Making Stuff
Robert8252 Posted November 7, 2010 Report Posted November 7, 2010 Also use the least amount of ports for the area you need. If a 8" is what you need it's better to use one 8 instead of two 6" or if you need a 6" the 6 is better then four 3" because there's less surface area the sound has to pass through. 2013 F150 Crew Cab Old Build Log Feedback 2013 F150 Equipment - Some Awesome Stereo Sound Making Stuff
armyranger3858 Posted November 8, 2010 Author Report Posted November 8, 2010 damn heated topic but alrigt imma go with two 6" aeros im sure it will be fine...orionstang is someone well known on here so i trust him
armyranger3858 Posted November 8, 2010 Author Report Posted November 8, 2010 but i will use that equation as well and see what i come up with and this is going in the trunk of my bonneville so i would rather save space with the aeros
