Idea for a new car audio technology, but......

I came up with this idea and want to get it out. Problem is i'm no stereo tech and don't have the means to design a prototype. How can I introduce this idea without it being stolen? Can I patent it without a working prototype? I don't want to get in discussions with an audio company and they steal my idea, you know. What do I do?

make the prototype first, see how it works out, if it turns out the way you like it, then get it patented per say for 20 years... you'll be good then...but still gotta have the prototype first

I might do that. It'll take time but probably the best route.

DC has treated me well. Maybe face-to-face i'll present it.

I'm really just looking to see if there are any other legal protections besides patents so I can present the idea, and not have it stolen.

make drawings...date them. mail them to yourself...don't open them until you are IN court and have to prove you came up with the idea first. This isn't technically legitimate, but it has held in court before.

Before making up any patents, what's you're idea?

You can patent an idea, jus need paperwork/drawing/sketches of it and the functions well explained. Make sure it can't easily be upgraded or features added because then someone else can make their own patent for it

or you could go and meet up with someone with some type of sketchs drawn up date them and sign them, then have who ever your talking to sign something saying "i will not steal this idea, nor can you take the basis of this idea and change factors" something like that you know? get it noterized and such? just my take on it
