8 guage is ok for 1kw probably. You might have hooked them up in series or something, or maybe you didnt tighten the wire onto the cap post well enough which caused a lot of resistance, no idea without some pictures and stuff really.

solder type plays a huge role as well. Many "new" solder types are lead free and this causes poor joints which crack easily.

wtf? Big 3 (I do 4) is all you need. Battery to frame (ground). Engine to frame (ground). Engine to battery (ground, extra insurance if frame contact is or becomes poor). Battery to alternator (power). Firewall, struts, throttle body, head, exhaust, alternator, and distributor are all grounded well already being as they are all bolted to each other or the frame quite firmly (i'd hope they are at least).
