why do you run a large gauge wire such as a 8 gauge or 10 gauge wire to your terminals on your sub. just to have it connect to a smaller gauge lead thats about 20 gauge. i was just thinking about this earlier and it seems weird to me. can any one elaborate on this?

The only way to delete your SMD account is for you crawl to steve meades door step on your knees and pleade for his forgiveness and acceptance to be released...He will either grant your wishes.....or choke you with a large piece of 0 gauge and electrocute you by hooking up a solid gold DC 12k at 0.000001 ohm and 10000 volts to your eye sockets and blow your head apart

You guys act like you have never clogged a toilet and ran around the bathroom frantically hoping it don't overflow.

If I'm not mistaken, someone with more knowledge can correct me. You want bigger wire for less resistance, so you get more of you power to the leads. Also, the leads are more like flexible copper bars more than wires in the sense that people make them out to be.

someone else with more experience can chime in though! :peepwall::noob:

I always thought it is due to the length of the run and current draw. Kinda like the power wire for your system. You may have 1/0 power wire running from the front of your vehicle to the rear. Then from a distribution block to your amps. The smaller gauge wire can handle the current for a short distance, then resistance starts to effect performance and reliability.

Someone with more knowledge/experience may correct me. ??

99 percent of the time the individuals you see wtih 8 gauge or even larger ran as speaker wire dont even need it. It's been shown to gain a few tenths in competitions. That's why some do it. If you can afford it and feel you need it go ahead. chances are you dont. you are more than fine with 12 or 14 guage wire in a majority of cases.

Exactly that, i did that test in my SPL gains topic, changed from a 12gauge to a 8gauge and won a couple of tenths on the meter, but to the ears it´s just the same, i mean, if you can´t hear a 1 db difference you can imagine a 0.2 dbs lol, but anyways, if you care about the score on the meter then use a good old 8 gauge wire, if not, use something smaller wich is gonna work the same for you!
