My CC-1 and DD-1 Review

Recommended Posts

Last week I was asked to help out on Gary Killians Excursion to add a few amps. For those of you who don't know, go look him up on youtube. Gary had 8 Crossfire 2400w amps and 12 subs. He has decided to add 4 more amps and upgrade the subs so each sub has its own power. Anyone who has seen his truck already knows that it is a tight fit. Adding 4 more amps was no fun. Plus each amp has dual power and grounds. So it's a lot like wiring 24 freaking amps. Luckily I was able to leave 6 and not touch them. The 8 were strapped so we had to add quite a bit of speaker wire as well.

So after 2 very long days of cutting wire sizes, soldering, shrink wrapping and making fit nice and neat like the rest of the truck, I was able to finally power up and set all the amps.

Now I'll be completely honest with you, i wasn't sold on either of these units as I had already invested in a very nice scope. In the tune of about $900 bucks. (TPI 460) It has hands down helped me diagnosis more issues then I care to remember. Without a doubt been a great investment.. Ray was nice enough to pressure me into picking up the pair before heading up. e said it will save me a boatload of time.

I picked up both units from Steve on Thursday with the intention of learning how they worked before jumping in on Gary's truck. Unfortunately time ran short as I had to make some distribution blocks and an RCA gang box.

So Sunday late day Sunday I pulled these units out of the box and dropped in some 9v batteries and went to work. I started out with the DD-1 on the deck and checked it's max volume out to the amps. I then set up on the easiest amp to get to and followed the step in the manual. At the same time I threw on my scope so I could see the differences in the 2. went through the steps and started turning up the gain till it read distortion. Right as the light came on is where i could start to see a dip in my sine-wave on the scope. It was dead on to where I would have rolled back the gain on my scope. Now the great part to all this is, there is no messing around with the screen settings on the scope to get an accurate reading. Anyone who has messed with a scope on a small screen will tell you that it takes a bit to get it to read where you can see it. It took me longer to set the scope screen then it would have to set distortion on all 12 amps.

Next we got on to the CC-1 I wasn't sure if I wanted to set the LPF 1st or gain match all the amps. After looking at the rest of Garys setup, we decided to leave the LPF open and allow his EQ to handle that. So we got right into gain matching all the amps. So again we got to reading the manual, set our cd track, read our master amp and went through the stack. It took longer to weed through the bunches of wires to get to the dials then it did to set the amps. Again, double checked everything with the scope and all the amps were dead on.

I would have to say that even with spending time to read the books, and double checking with my scope, it took us all of 10 min to set all 12 amps start to finish. I would be willing to bet that we could of done it in under 5 min with knowing how to do it and skipping the scope double check.

So for anyone thinking of spending the money to get the pair, I say without a doubt it is a good investment. If you compare it to the money I spent on a scope then it's a great investment. My hats off the Tony and Steve for working to bring an affordable product to the market

Didn't get many pics as we were on turbo speed all weekend to get the truck together. but here is a few for ya.

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)
