A dd-1 is like 170$

That's a lot to use it a couple times, how bad could it be if I used a dmm

170 Isn't a lot when it is your insurance on protecting hundreds or thousands worth of audio equipment.

170? MSRP is $189.99 and not one single person has spent a penny over $149.99 - usually even $10 bucks cheaper then that with coupon. How bad can it be if you use a DMM? who knows, just guess your gain settings, you will have the same results. Might not blow anything up, might blow it all up. Might sound good, might distort. You won't know because a DMM won't show you distortion.

ive said it once and ill say it again. A dd-1 can not blow up an amp. It does not output any signal nor is it capable to. ITs still the guy with his hand on the knob.

Yaaa right. DBR didn't say that. They can't be that stupid. That is like saying a scope is responsible for blowing up your amp. NOT gonna happen.

Like i said, there is a reason these are being used in training courses all over the world and multiple MAJOR manufacturer's own them and RAVE about them.

I know I love my DD-1, very useful tool indeed, easy to use, quick to set gains, and friends been impressed with it so far, saying their systems sound alot clearer now.

Yeah, for some like me, $140 is alot, but it's cheaper than having amps go kaboom, and due to the fact it's analog and durable, you can probably have it for 20 years, and it would still be useful.

This was a fun read while I ate some popcorn, I must say good points from both sides of the decussion. I just happen to use an o scope to set mine, because you don't know exactly without something telling you it is distorting or clipping. I have used the DMM trick and have blown up 15s doing so, just gonna put that out there, and I have set gains with o scope and blown up 15s, so not everytime is clipping or distortion that causes the failure. Having said that, which method is best, the one that WORKS for you. If the DD1 is quick and simple to use which it is, and that is what you like or want to use go that route, will other things work to set your gains, sure. You the customer is the ultimate deciding factor in what to do at the end of the day.

Set with ear = not sure where clipping distortion is

Set with DMM = not sure where clipping distortion is

Set with oscope = you know where clipping is

Set with DD1 = you know where distortion is

Simple as that. If clipping and distortion matter to you, select the one that applies.

Who said db-r told them not to use the DD-1? DD-1 or scope for me, and because it's so simple I choose DD-1.

A dd-1 is much more portable then an oscope also, dragging an o-scope around is a pain in the ass.

or if you have a small scope the screen isnt always big enough to be of value.

LOL i can attest to this. my scope is like 20lb. its like carrying around a small computer tower.
