2v vs 4v

i have always had better luck with 4 and 5 volt preouts sounding better with my sub amps and with my audison 1.1k i could not get it to put out clean power or low bass with a 2 volt preout (cheap alpine iva-w205) vs the pioneer 3200bt 4v i had no problems

my amp gain is set correctly right now. it may have been a little high before but only for the worse (more clipping) which mosty likely caused the heat i had.

i dont see why you are going off on this long explanation man. im not retarded. i know a line driver isnt gunna make me double loud? i never said that? double cone area double power, yea i know. your taking this response too far and it is rather insulting to me.

i see what your saying and how you have done all these tests, thanks for the insight. i agree with all of what you say except when you say to hear an audible difference you must be 2-3 db louder. from my experience it is closer to 1db. less than 1 db your mind is playing tricks on you. but 1 db in my opinion is audibly different in some applications, not all. im not here to argue with you but you are assuming i don't know jack and saying things i never asked and already know the answer to.

You made it out to seem that the line driver made such a big difference in your setup, and I based my reply off what you said. Now that you added the truth to your reply, in saying how you where clipping pre line driver, of coarse things will be better now, than before..

Bottom line this thread is not about you, nor have I ever said that you are retarded, or that you dont know jack, or that Im insulting you with knowledge, Your just putting words in my mouth now, even tho it was your own doing when you failed on your part to leave key things out of your original post...

Misleading posts, or advice from members that may not know right from wrong is not needed. So Im going to do my best to insure that I can educate the original poster who started this thread, as well as the few that where told/taught wrong..

honestly man i took it the wrong way. my bad. what you said was correct and i did not fully explain my situation. this thread isnt about me either. but your information is correct how a line driver does not make you louder. just generally better parts are used with higher preout voltage units.

Output is based on a lot of factors. What voltage you see musical will be different than what you see with tones. Look at almost all ratings on amps and speakers and you will find that it is usually X @ Y hz @ Z% thd.

So say a a/b amp may be rated at 50x4 @ 1khz @ .05thd, but power above and below that may or may not drop off. Same for pre outs. It's unusual to see actual rated power levels when playing music because music is dynamic.

Pre-outs don't suffer from variables like impedance rise like amplifiers do s far as I know.

So it is better to have say a 4v or better preout because you will see a higher nominal voltage than you would with a 2v or 1v output. And that will help to cover up any noise in your system. Plus h/u's with higher volt outputs will likely have better and cleaner pre-outs to begin with.

I didn't mean to imply that preout voltage drops off above and below 1k, just that rated output of anything will vary on other factors that are difficult to quantify.

should be able to look up specs, but otherwise you can use a voltmeter I'm fluke multimeter
