I've learned a lot by reading posts by the more experienced people on this site for the past few months, and there is still plenty I need to learn, and even more that I want to try. I'm trying to understand how Fs and tuning of the enclosure correspond. I know that the enclosure sets the response curve and peak of the system. How does the Fs factor in to this? For example: If I take my SeX's which have a Fs of 25.1 Hz and put them in an enclosure tuned to lets say 40 Hz what would I be able to play? Would the low Fs just extend the bass response lower than normal? Would the subwoofer be able to safely play down to 25 hz without risking damage?

Thanks for any input in advance, I'm just trying to learn as much as possible because since the audio bug bit me I want to learn everything! haha

I doubt you would be able to play to 25hz in a 40hz tuned box.

I think FS plays more of a role in a t-line box.

A normal ported box I think FS plays very, very minute role

Edit: and depending on what you are tuned to you can play maybe 5-10 hz below that safely. Anymore and you really increase your chances of failure

I'm tuned to 35 and the lowest I can still play loudly is 27-28hz.

25hz just makes the woofers move a bunch and doesn't do much

Well your not loud unless your play 15 hz and can hear it!!! Lol

Fs is the resonant frequency of the speaker. I've always tried to tune within 4hz or so of the subs Fs, but you by no means need to. For example, if I had a Skar VVX with an Fs of 21... I wouldn't tune to 25. I'd tune to 30 though. Lub dem lowz.

Like I said that box was just an example, I'm not gonna build it. Just trying to understand the theory behind enclosures. What would cause damage to the sub playing below the tuning frequency? If the Fs is free air resonance wouldn't the enclosure be null at the fs below tuning? Currently I'm tuned to 34hz and have no problem playing down to the low 20's but I'm also running like 1/4 RMS of my subs.

A low fs just means that that sub will be able to play those lower frequencies easier than a sub with a higher fs. Just because a sub may have a higher fs, doesn't mean that it can't play into the mid 20s, it just means that it will have to work harder and will require more motor force to do so.

Another thing about ts specs that is very deceiving, ts specs are most commonly run using a tool that only puts out a few watts at most. This barely tickles the sub, yet people rely on these specs to build and tune boxes. So much changes when you put full power to a sub. I would be more interested in knowing the fs of a sub with full rates power going to it.

isn't this one of the reasons d'amore came out with the impedance meter?
