SMD DD-1 vs Built-in clipping indicator on a 2011 Hifonics Colossus

Clipping indicators on amplifiers are triggered to turn on when the amplifier rail voltage meets or exceeds a certain number, Every amp I ever seen and tested with my dd-1 and my old snap-on oscilloscope had the light blink before the amplifier was clipping.

So if you tune your amp going off the clipping indicator on your amps or remote knobs, your not getting full useful power from it.

right. but its pretty damn close though isnt it? (atleast with these videos) and with seeing these it makes me trust a clipping light more especially when its playing it safe and showing clip when its not clipping. or is it still wrong to trust the light?
I don't about u but I would like to get the best out of what I have not 90 percent .. I would not trust the clipping light on these amps to the fullest they are just ment to give u an idea.. I would not trust those lights over the dd-1

would i use a clipping light over a dd1? hell no. but from what i have seen with these videos, for those that dont have a dd1, the clipping indicator actually seems to work pretty well when it comes to sniffing out clip. atleast before it clips anyway.

Dd-1 will always be correct, compare to a clipping light on a amp or knob..so your saying -10db is actually 0db..got me confused on that one...I use -10db

I know this is old as all get out but I haven't been on her in awhile. The 0db = -10db was before I knew as much as I do now as was an issue with the built-in xover/eq settings causing the change from -10db to 0db when I was playing around. If I would of actually read the manual I would of known better but I had only watched videos.

I now know an eq isn't for boosting bass and is for well eqing and you cut and not boost unless you have to and if you want more bass get more or better subs and more or a bigger amp. You live and learn.

The clipping light on amps ignores the quality of the signal, unless the quality is so bad it affects the output voltage.

The DD-1 detects more than just clipping though, it's a distortion detector. It checks the signal quality against the source. When you are using the tones from a clean source, then the clipping light probably does match pretty closely since clipping is likely to be the cause of the distortion.

At least I think this is how it all works.

If you dial in the VU-Din or the OM-1 that way show the red light turns on when the dd-1 red light turns on then yes.

i realize it's not meant for that.  but i was figuring it could be set up like that.  i think i would get paranoid with that in my dash.  always watching it.

The red and yellow sticks out against the blue LEDs pretty easily. Mount it in a place you can see in your peripheral, and you'll be good to go.  I like my OM-1 a lot
