Finally Getting My System

I've saved up some money finally, and I've decided to get a Sundown SA-12 for my 2012 Scion TC.

The problem is, do I get the 2 OHM or 4 OHM? Also, which amp should I get? I need a good one, but not one extremely expensive. Looking for 500-1000 watts. Lastly, if you could tell me how much of what cables I need, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm buying Dave the box guy's value single 12 ported box, also.

normally I would say go with 4ohm cuz that is much easier to work with (4 ohm you can wire to 4 ohm or down to 1 ohm... 2 ohm you can go 2 ohm or you can go .5 ohm which you don't wanna do with that sub) but in this case unless you plan on upgrading later I would say go with the 2 ohm cuz at that RMS it's easier to find stuff that you can use. off the top of my head I can't think of anyone that makes a 600rms D class amp at least not that is worth putting on an SA sub... smallest SA makes is 1200... nice thing about that with the sub at 2 ohm is that puts that amp dishing out ~700w which I'm sure that sub would do just fine with once it's broken in. (I kinda like sticking with same brands if I can cuz in my mind that means that they're more likely to have the same rms rating scale lol) as far as wire go for at least 8 gauge wire but I would probably go with either 4 or 1/0 cuz then you don't ever have to swap it out if you do decide you want more power, and have enough of that to probably run from fender to bumper. and I would guess that would probably be a good measuring scale for how long to have the (16 gauge?) wire for your remote and minimum to have for your rca cables (I think that's what they're called... the ones that take the audio from your radio to the amp) and probably at least 11 feet of 16 gauge speaker wire to run from your amp to your subs and to wire the subs together.

that is all I can think of that you should need as far as amp speaker type and wires but I could be missing something I've only got a few years in car audio and only a few months of REALLY getting into it and asking questions and learning... but I did set up my last system myself (ran the wires, wired the subs, wired the amp, built the box, etc)

Sounds like you're just starting out so don't jump in too far yet.

Also sounds like you want to be conservative with the amp purchase.

Your best bet would be to check the For Sale section and find something that fits your budget and needs.

You haven't gotten the sub yet so you have a lot of wiring options.

Check out the amps and their specs and order a sub that can match it.

I'll poke around that section and see.

So Adil, D4 option would be either 8 or 2ohm final impedance.

And D2 option would be either 4 or 1ohm final impedance.

Fosgate made a nice 600.1 a few years back. I ran it, and it was a nice amp. I'd say that amp is "worthy" to put with that sub. There is plenty of Rockford Prime series right in that power range too. A Fosgate Prime R750.1 would be a good matchup for that sub.

Kicker ZX750.1's kick major butt if you can find one cheap used. AQ750.1's are sweet. You could even pick up a Hifonics BRZ1200 and a D4 SA-12 for good value.

Cable wise, 4 gauge is recommended for all of those amps but it never hurts to go overkill and get some 2 gauge or 1/0 to be safe for future upgrades.

oh yea I forgot AQ had a 750w mono D amp... as sonny said above though with him only doing one sub he would have to get it D2 in order to wire it to 1ohm... if he gets a D4 and a slightly bigger amp he will only be wired to 2ohm but he will have room that if he wants to upgrade to buy a second SA12 he doesn't have to get 2 new subs and a bigger amp he can just get 1 more SA and a new box... rewire them down to 1ohm... and boom he just went from 1 SA on 600w to 2 SA on 1200w lol

So say I get the 2ohm SA 12; if an amp say is 750.1 and 750 x 1 @ 2 ohms; I just wire the 2ohm sub to the amp like normal?

It's a DVC sub. So there is TWO 2OHM voice coils. Wire them in parallel to get 1ohm. Or series to get 4 ohm.

I'd get a dual 4 ohm sub. Get a 1200w amp like an audioque 1200. Run at two ohms ~ 600w. In the future you could get another d4 sa12. Run them both together at 1ohm to get ~1200w.
