momofx76 Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I bought a DC Power HP 320A Alternator and I installed the alternator together with a 1/0 gauge direct wire (Knukonceptz Kolossus OFC) from the alternator to my front battery (Kinetik HC3800). I did a load test on the alternator at approx 3500+ constant engine rpm and whenever my 500A load tester (carbon pile load tester) was turned up close to around 280A the voltage rapidly dropped to around 11.2 volts (Fluke 87 Meter connected as well to verify voltage drop)... Even occasionaly revving up to 4500rpm did not increase the voltage. Is there an issue with the alternator or am I not doing something right? Note that it was tested before the vehicle was driven so heat did not affect it. Also the 500A carbon pile load tester was connected directly on the alternator + and then also tested on the battery + (the ground was always on the battery since I updated all the ground to 1/0). Still same results...
8ight Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 How are you measuring the amperage draw of the load tester? Built in screen/analog readout? I would clamp it. I'm gonna hate
Guest Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 did you buy a new belt for it? it needs to grip that alt pretty hard to prevent slipping.
momofx76 Posted March 1, 2013 Author Report Posted March 1, 2013 Does it have a voltage regulator? Yes it is internal as far as I know. How are you measuring the amperage draw of the load tester? Built in screen/analog readout? I would clamp it. The 500A Carbon Pile load tester has two analog gauges one shows the amperage up to 500A and the other is the voltage. did you buy a new belt for it? it needs to grip that alt pretty hard to prevent slipping. Yes I was told this alternator is an oem fit and to use the stock size belt. I changed the belt when installing the alternator (Dayco belt)
SnowDrifter Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 Any belt slip? Was the car warm or cold? If it's warm: that sounds about right. The alt is spec'd at 290a hot. Component tolerances as well as alternator temperature can affect this. ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
sayhuh? Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 Try contacting Rob. He'll be able to better help you. Blown
Mikey Bates Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I just put an alt in that was OEM fit and had to get a belt .8 inches shorter, solved that.. just 2 cents
audiofanaticz Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 no one asked what make, model, and year the vehicle is???
momofx76 Posted March 1, 2013 Author Report Posted March 1, 2013 The vehicle is a 2008 (2nd gen) Scion XB. Mikey, I did not hear the belt slipping when the alternator was "loaded" but one thing I DID notice is that the belt did go on this alternator a LITTLE BIT easier but it does seem to be pretty snug on there. Is there any way I can check if its tight enough?
