Jake Starnes Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Well, I got mixed answers on a Car Audio Q&A page on facebook so I thought I would ask here. Fixing to do big 3 with 1/0 welding cable, I have a stock 90 amp alternator, should i fuse the wire going from alt to battery? And if so how many amps? Skullz Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 No you don't have to fuse the alt wire but please use some tech flex or wire loom to protect it, you will want to fuse the run from front to back if you have a battery or amplifier. 01 Ford focus ZX3 Pioneer AVH-X491BHS PPI PC 4800.2 Morel Maximo 6.5" x2
Swordlordboy1234 Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Not too much of a need to fuse big 3 IMO. Some people do . 90 amp alternator isn't very much considering that's at peak, and your car uses 50 of that 90 to run, so what equipment are you planning to run? The only wire you will need to fuse is the one going from the front battery to the rear battery or amp, depending on your set up My old YouTube channel : http://www.youtube.com/user/SwordLords1234?feature=mhee My old build log : http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/161872-96-accord-b2-sundown-sky-high-dc-power-re-re-build-for-heatwave/page-37 My New Build - http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/207041-2016-mazda-6-sql-build/ 2016 Mazda 6 Touring JL Fix 86 - OEM signal correction B2 prototype DSP 6to8 B2 Ref63 - 3 way active set 2 B2 Class H quattro's 1 B2 Zero.5R @.5 2 B2 HNv3 12 d2 B2 SLIP40 - Lithium in the trunk Northstar Group 35 under the hood 100ft 2/0 welding cable 30ft 4ga welding cable 20ft 8ga welding cable All stinger OFC speaker wire Soundrive custom RCA's Tons of attention to detail.... justin0943 Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 like other said you don't need to but to be on the safe side you should, I did a buddy truck he bought a 200amp breaker an lost it he only running a stock 150amp alt and a kenwood 300w amp so I just did the big 3 without fuse with 1/0 the wire doesn't even get warm but to the bat to the amp got an 100amp fuse. 02 dodge ram 1500 reg cab 3rd gen 2 sundown sd-2 d4 soundstream rub1.2500 amp all sky high car audio-fuse,fuse holder, wire, ring lugs and rca flex tech box design by Joe X supension-mcgaughys 2in drop spindal ,western chassis 6in flip kit, buddy custom c-notch 04 5.7l hemi motor swap and made it an slt eletric everthing youtube channel-http://www.youtube.c...43?feature=mhee http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/190882-02-dodge-ram-1500-3rd-gen/
Jake Starnes Posted July 14, 2013 Author Report Posted July 14, 2013 Currentyl i have a re 1500.1 dts, 2 re sex12 d4s wire to 1 ohm, adn 4 gauge from bat to amp. i was going to fab up a custom bracket when i had free time and materials to put a 137 amp alt from another car on there. its only 1000 watts but my voltage drops below 12 when at idle and at full tilt its gets to about 12.8-13.1 In Progress of building Headunit: JVC KDR-540 Wires: Execution Audio 1/0 CCA front to back and big 3 Amp: RE Audio dts 1500.1 Subs: 2 RE Audio SE-X 12d4s Stock Jeep Battery and 137 amp alternator 2 pioneer 6x9s and 2 jvc 4" speakers 1993 Jeep YJ Wrangler 4.0 automatic
SnowDrifter Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Fuse it close to the battery. Better safe than sorry. It would be a shame to get in a fender bender and have your whole car go up in smoke because something shifted and pinched the wire ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
john253a Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 That amp has 3x40a fuses That means it can pull 120amp's before blowing a fuse And your only supplying it somewhere from 40-60amp That's why your sitting below 12v That cook your amp territory Personally For 1500rms you need 1x 0g run batt to amp or distribution block and place block within 18" of amp and run the 4g from block to amp, you'll also be able to run from that to mids/highs amp as well You'll need big 3 but until you have more amp charging you batt, you won't get much of an improvement, As for fusing the cable All as said ^ is correct, When choosing a fuse, chose it based on the wire ratting not what's on special or what your mates, mate told him You'll also need a decent batt under hood At least a 3400 but idd put the biggest you can fit
