bass boost question... curiosity.

Recommended Posts

Here is the skinny on bass boost. Think of it this way, if you say to yourself, "hmm i don't have enough low and highs" the answer is not to turn up bass and treble, the answer is to cut the midrange back so the highs and lows will be more pronounce. If you lose too much output from cutting the midrange then you add more power to compensate and you gain more headroom by doing that,

You bass boost is the same deal. You should not use bass boost because if your gains are set right then turning it up can cause either distortion or clipping.

Now i say "can". And of course there are people who run muti-band EQ's who have some frequencies above 0db. But, to boost a certain freq above 0db and not cause issues take some testing and some experience. You have to know you system, what it can do, and its limits.

Long story short, in general it is better to cut unwanted freq not boost the ones you want.

makes perfect sense... sounds a lot like mastering. :D

now the majority of the problem with my particular situation is this... the highs and mids are stock well half of them... and I'm just starting to financially recover from my being off of work for three weeks after surgery. this next full pay check I plan on my big three... and some good speaker wire. and hopefully my crossover... then next chevk I should be able to have all my speakers. running on a crap amp of course but that'll be changing not too long after that. so basically my cutting frequencies is very limited. though not impossible so I'll do what I can now... but basically I was hoping to get a little bit louder. as bass on the whole... but I'm supposing I'll be waiting the week or so to get me aeroport before I can see much in that area. hmmm... time to go fiddle with my head unit and see what I can find out about cutting the highs and crappybass distortion from crappy dodge stock speakers :D thanks yall :D

Also, I just want to add that in Steve's Video of him doing a demo for the deaf gentlemen he uses, errr, lets them use the bass knob. Just stating that as an example as I'm pretty sure people will trust that bass knobs aren't bad if Steve (who knows his shit) uses one, However, As stated above, bass knob does not equal evil, just takes tuning and a specific set up and knowledge base to use one. I think most people don't use them. (that's a relative statement)

I questioned that video in my head where hands over the bass knob. Simple answer, set your gains with the knob turned all the way up and it gives you a way to turn down the bass later. But as stated by others, this should only be done if your willing to tune properly. Even a gain knob like an LC-1 needs correct tuning. You can't just crank that to full blast either. Also as already stated, knobs don't make up for lack of power.

no doubt... after fiddling with my head unit and getting everything good I didn't feel comfortable turning the bass knob that came with my amp to full tilt so I backed it down again to about 3 4 db of boost so that I can still get a lil adjustment if needed but still not blow my shit ya know? thanks y'all!

Steve's bass knob isn't a bass boost knob. It's a gain attenuation knob. Meaning: It makes the signal quieter, not louder

dude that's what mine does... the pot on the knob adjusts between zero and highest set boost on the amp.... it makes it quieter then takes it back up to normal.
