Why people not like strapping amps?

If you understand ohms law, you will realize why strapping is better. Do some homework, I can't give all the answers, makes it to easy lol.

One reason I've heard against strapping amps is that it puts more stress on the amps. Not in an "ohms" sense, but in the sense that you have twice the power running through each amp than they're actually made for. I'm no electrical engineer, though, so I can't say anything about the validity of that.

strapping is when you wire two amplifiers together (generally have a connection cable specifically for this) to achieve the power of both amps together. It essentially turns 2 amps into 1 big amp. You use the master amplifiers (amp 1) settings to control the slave amp (amp 2). Instead of wiring each amp separately at 1 ohm each, you generally will wire the subs to 2 ohms strapped... this will result in each amp seeing 1 ohm. When strapped you dont necessarily gain or loose power either. Strapping is almost like bridging channels, but instead you are bridging amplifiers.

2 2000w amps not strapped (1 ohm each) = 4000w

2 2000w amps strapped (2 ohm) = 4000w

hopefully this clears things up.

sounds like playing with fire... like 2 engines on the same crank shaft one hiccups and everything goes boom.. i usually calculate my impedance of subs and rms and purchase my amp around that. Kinda like when i bought my sub it was said to be 2 ohm and i seen my amp did 500rms at 2ohm and less rms at 4 ohms but when i received the sub i put my meter across it and it was showing 4 ohms and man was it a bitch trying to tell a customer service rep they sent me a 4ohm sub not a 2 ohm... his answer its same shit it doesn't give you more wattage its just ohms,,,, so i sat down and drew it on a piece of paper how it worked until he switched it out for me -.-' lol sorry for the rant / story

not at all like playing with fire..... another failsafe actually, if one amp fails, no power it put out, instead of 1 amp failing, the other still kicking 100%, making its subs unload (due to lost pressure in the enclosure), and do the same to the newly unpowered subs turning them into passive radiators.

don't you have less impedance rise if you strap 2 amps?

i think thats the benefit to strapping

i think it is something like that, maybe ami will chime in a release a couple quick reasons.

once upon a time i read about ohms law on the12volt.com one day i shall reread this piece of wisdom.

Wiring options. That's the only benefit of strippable amps, wiring options.

Let's say you have 2 amps that put out 1000wrms at 1 ohm. 2000wrms total.

They are strippable for 2000wrms at 2 ohms.

Now you have 1 dual 4 ohm voice coil sub that you want to send all 2000wrms to. You can't running the amps separately, but by strapping the amps and running the subs voice coils in parallel at 2 ohms, you can realize the full capability of both amps.

It is not harder or easier on an amp strapping them. If you run them at the lowest rated impedance separately or strapped they are working the same.

Oh, and AMI Customs- I do understand ohm's law! :Tom:

Ok I will give one reason, the best reason for why you should run strapped. It has to do with ACV and ACC, when strapped you run a much higher ACV, voltage is a good thing keeps stuff cooler. So since you are running a 2 ohm load, your ACV is much higher then running two amps at 1 ohm each unstrapped, meaning the coils run cooler. Due to higher output voltage and lower output current. This is due to shifted power curve since you are now running at a higher impedance overall.

That will be over some peoples heads, but strapping is better under the correct application. Just depends on why you need too and for what reason and goal you are trying to accomplish. Strapped does have cons too.

Dunno if its been answered already.. but DC amps ofc do rated and do more then they're rated..

down rpping vanderbilt. 30 miles from victoria. i own the 3rd loudest setup here out of 3. but i did put together all 3 setups

strapping 2 amps together ? like bolting them next together? using bungy cables to hold them down? or wiring separate amps to each sub
