How much different does Xmax make

Lets say you have 2 subs with the same motors, same size sub. One sub has an Xmax of 7mm one way and the other sub has an Xmax of 14mm one way. And both subs are being pushed with the same power and same box.

What gains would be seen?

Don't get power or motors in the mix, same diameter double the excursion = double displacement.

Xmax is how far the cone/coil can be moved in one direction by applying current to the coil. Xmech is how far the cone/coil can be moved by pushing it with your hand or some means other than by applying current to the voice coil.

Xmech will always be more than xmax, which serves to keep the driver from being pushed to its mechanical limits (bottoming out, which is often confused with clipping) by the amplifier, when things are properly functioning and matched correctly.

Xmax is one way and there are a few methods for calculation, I like best the one that measures THD to be less than 10%.

Keep in mind this is theoretical.

There are a TON of other factors that you have to take into account.

-The compliance of both subs (to reach the larger xmax, the 2nd sub might have a stiffer suspension).

-Are you pushing your current sub all the way to its xmax? If not then you may not get the newer sub past that point either, especially with the same power.

-The sub with the higher xmax is probably engineered for a larger box. Hard to say what it will do in a smaller box?

Good question though

Occasionally you can hear the current sub reach it's max. Both subs have the same recommended sealed specs.The new sub will eventually see 2.5 times the power same power for a few weeks. Still curious to see if there is a difference.
