Shigshwa Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 I'm considering installing an adjustable voltage module for my alternator, because my PCM for my 05 Camry keeps it 14v cold, 13.4 hot. I'd like to leave the voltage low for when I drive, but I'd like the ability to crank the voltage up when demoing. In total, the entire upgrade would be 200 dollars. At 40hz(I tuned to 34, but it peaks 40), I meter a 142 at 13.1v with my DC 3.5k powering an SP4. If I increased my voltage to say... 14.5v when I demo, would this increase result in any noticeable differences in perceived volume, or would this really only be good for increasing my SPL score by a few db? I want to upgrade so my system sounds louder, but if it's barely noticeable, I don't want to spend 200 dollars doing it. I'm asking this because I measured a 250A draw with my clamp meter at 50hz. The voltage was 13.1v. This would mean that I would be putting 3275W through the sub. Raising the voltage to 14.5 would increase my wattage to 3625W. This means I would theoretically put out about 300 more watts, which doesn't seem significant enough to justify upgrading. I know clamping an amp is not accurate, but this is my only means of measuring the amp at the moment. In case you guys need to know, my alternator is a Mechman 270, and I have a YellowTop and D3100.
HHR Ed Posted September 24, 2013 Report Posted September 24, 2013 There is no guarantee that increasing voltage will have any effect on SPL or perceived loudness at all. That you will have to test. You may already be at the power limits of your sub/ enclosure or you may not. What it will do is to keep your batts charged more effectively. I'd also suggest to ditch the yellow top and get another XS batt. My cold charge is around 14.7, then, due to heat, i charge at 13.5. To me,.. if i can battle that, im going to. I have bought a VCM to get my loss back. I cant wait to get it on....... How much will it really help? Ill let you know, but, i know it cant hurt.... thats for sure. Im really wanting it for my bass race runs... Not power output. The amplifier efficiency reduces that by a certain factor. I asked XS power and they said... "If the alternator you have has a two pin plug, the VCM will not work with it. That's a big drop in voltage, I'm curious to know. I'm just not too satisfied with my 142. But... since I'm aiming for an SQL setup, I don't think I can complain. I'm just curious as to how people tune relatively low, around my tuning or even below and get more dBs. I'm thinking it might be box volume, but I'm afraid of losing any necessary power handing my box provides by adding volume.
