Rule of thumbs thread.

Decided to make a thread so everyone can post general rules of thumb for car audio. Don't post anything not car audio related or not a rule of thumb (eg, rule of thumb is bigger woofers need more power than smaller subs in order to get loud) and so they are all in one place, hopefully some people learn something including myself.

Ill start with one:

Increases in power / voltage / decibels:

1.26 x power = 1.12 x voltage/excursion = +1db

1.59 x power = 1.26 x voltage/excursion = +2db

*2.00 x power = 1.41 x voltage/excursion = +3db

2.52 x power = 1.59 x voltage/excursion = +4db

3.18 x power = 1.78 x voltage/excursion = +5db

*4.00 x power = 2 x voltage/excursion = +6db

5.04 x power = 2.24 x voltage/excursion = +7db

6.35 x power = 2.54 x voltage/excursion = +8db

8.00 x power = 2.83 x voltage/excursion = +9db

*10.0 x power = 3.16 x voltage/excursion = +10db

Never assume.

Sand in green stage.

the only way to know how loud you will be is to build and meter it.

Use sound deadening (unless your competing and it lowers your score)....maybe not a rule, but it sure as hell should be.

Never listen to how loud your friend's cousin's brother's half uncle is.

Don't complain when your cheap equipment doesn't hold up to torture.

If you fail, recognize it, and try again.

the number one rule: don't be a douche bag with your system. turn it down at red lights and in residential areas. anyone who breaks this rule is subject to a punch in the face.
