When you go to install it in your car it would be better to connect the (empty) reducers to the amp first then put the wire in. To be safe. If your negative side contacts another ground, like interior metal, you are ok. If your positive wire does the same, bad news. So I would protect both, but if you're only going to do one, I would wrap the positive.
