How Low Should Voltage Drop On XS D3400 During Storage?

Recommended Posts

I have my Monte SS that I store every winter & this was the first I stored it with the D3400.

I unhooked everything from the BATT, e v e r y t h i n g, & the resting voltage was teetering between 13.0 - 13.1v ... it had been idling for about 10 minutes before I shut it off & went through my other checklist(s).

Fast FWD to this past Tuesday, & I uncover it, & pop the hood, &, much to my surprise, it read 12.45v. Two DMMs, one olde time "needle" meter, & a SMD VM-1.

Now it charged up just fine over the course of 90-minutes or so to 12.8v with the charger I have before I started the car, & all was Honkey-Dorey.

Question is: Sitting by itself, should it have dropped nearly seven-tenths of a volt, or am I just looking for something to create a thread about?

PS: I am in Syracuse, NY, USA. We had one of the coldest winters in recent memory ... in case that Super Polar Vortex cold had anything to do with BATTs. (Pardon my ignorance in that regard.)

winter is defiantly gonna have an effect on ur voltage.

that being said it doesn't seem odd/horrible to me. normal car batteries float around 12.4ish volts anyways.

  • 2 weeks later...

XS power batts sitting for 6 months resting was 12.4

I put a smart charger on them and now they can sit for 2 weeks and will not rest under 13.2

is they are getting used on the daily or close to it then they shouldn't drop below 13 resting, and any above that is awesome. Sitting long period of time like winter in theory it would be nice for them not to drop past 13, or 12.8, or 12.4 but just because they do doesn't mean they are done for. Get them charged Properly* and see how they perform and rest after that IMO, but I am no expert.

Grab a battery tender and keep it hooked up throughout the winter

If you have a bigger charger: Charge the battery, drain it, then immediately charge it again. That will refresh it

When you say drain it, do you mean apply a "smaller" load to it until voltage reaches a certain point?

What's the purpose of refreshing a battery? Increased resting voltage? Is that it?

Sorry for the threadjack.. I feel that this is relevant lol

I usually do a 20-30a load on my own batteries. Couple car headlights wired together is a good way to do it. Drain down to ~10.5v under load, then pop it right back on the charger. Purpose of doing this is to break up plate sulfation to ensure that the chemical process of discharging a battery is fully reversed in the charging stage -- it insures a fuller charge to the battery. Really easy to see because your resting voltage will go up :)

I cycle my own batteries like this every 2 months. My d1400 will sit at 15.25v overnight and performs better under load than it did out of the box :D

Ohh.. Interesting :good: I think my charger does this, but by sending a 15.8v pulse? I might hit you up on FB later.

Ctek? That high voltage pulse thing is a load of bull lol. Ctek makes good chargers but that feature is a major turn off for me. Pretty much why I didn't buy one

I do like the Ctek chargers, but i do NOT like the 1111003 stages and "pulse shit mode".

It should see 14plus for a bit of time,...., then float 13.5 ish for ever.

Why i went with my 1005

Yup, CTEK. I haven't heard or read anything bad about it, which is why I got it.

It seems to do it for only like 5 seconds TOPS. It may not necessarily help, but do you find it dangerous?
