Nubster
Decided to give a single (for now) SD-2 8 a try in the hatch of my Subaru Crosstrek. I'll be feeding it 650ish watts at 2 ohm. Trying to keep the box as small as possible which is why I decided on this sub and the budget only allows one at the moment. Anyways...do I need 3/4" mdf for the box or will I be ok with 1/2"? I'm working on designing my first box so it's all new and a bit overwhelming even though this will be a super simple tiny box...probably wedge shaped so it'll fit against the back of the rear seat. But I have a question that will dictate how I build the box....what would the best firing angle be for my sub? Straight back, angled towards the back glass, straight up, ect...there is no rear deck or anything that will cover the cargo area of the car, at least when I'm driving and playing music. If anyone can help me some with this build, I'd greatly appreciate it.
mothra
5/8" minimum for enclosure. 1/2" is for mounting amps and beauty panels Quote if nothing changes, nothing changes You don't know what you don't know, till you don't know
blanestudly
when your sub flexes so does your box, the thicker the MDF(or whatever you fancy). the less flex in the box. its a better environment for your sub. I dont know how much space you have in your vehicle but i would suggest leaving space so the sub doesnt slap on anything. Im not sure what the actual number is but i believe you need to keep the sub the radius of it, away from the wall its being fired at. so if its an 8, give it 4 in of space if possible. Im no doctor tho.. the farther the space from you and your sub will allow it to resonate more and sound better. facing back is usually ideal, except on SPL builds. Nubster
No problem. I just wasn't sure. 3/4" isn't an issue and is cheap enough for a sheet. I just figured if I could save an extra tiny bit of space and weight I'd try. But 3/4" it is.

Smoove
SA-8 v2 3/4"SD-2-8 1/2"Most 8's you can get away with 3/4" baffle with the rest of the box 1/2".But always remember. If you half-ass your box it will fall apart or sound like crap. And for you haters out there. I put RF HE-2 8's in 1/2" boxes where they lived for 6yrs. with zero problems. So if 1/2 will support HE's, it will support SD-2's.
