My test: Sonido Mask ZX-2000.1

I have to say... I am officially sick of this amp. So let's just get the test done and move on with our lives.

Sonido Mask 2000.1

Price - $289

Rated RMS @ 1 Ohm(<1% DISTORTION) 1936W
RMS @ 2 Ohm(<1% DISTORTION) 1300W
RMS @ 4 Ohm(<1% DISTORTION) 1050W
Fuse Rating 150A
I assume these numbers are at 14.4v, but this is a 12v test on 12v batts.

The amp is really not all that bad looking, but anytime anything lights up on the front of an amp, it makes me think it's cheap because it's obviously being marketed to a specific crowd. And I'd rather you spend that money elsewhere than an LED logo. Or cut it out of the cost altogether. But that's me.

You can tell just by picking the amp up that it's lacking either the sink or the guts to be a 2k. Or both. It has a "budget" feel to it. I've handled 1k's with more heft.

Control side. Variable bass boost is a nice feature, I suppose. *If* people knew how to properly utilize it. But most don't. And if they do, they know better than to use it anyway. SSF and LPF. Ok. The pots are actually decent. You would expect plastic pots on an amp like this, but this is Sonido's premium line so I guess it has some bells and whistles. I didn't bother to play with the bass knob, but I dont' have much faith in those 3.5mm ones. And most of you know how I feel about gain knobs anyway. "Tiffany" style RCA's are a nice touch.

Solid input terminals. Not particularly oversized, but at least they're 1/0. Pretty standard on a 2k though. The set screws are phillips head. Yippee. The speaker side fits 8awg no problem and the power and ground fit 1/0 welding without any fuss. I like when the remote is between the terminals. It gives a little bit of seperation between the power and ground- because frayed wire can make for some fireworks.

Guts and some closeups of the board.

On to the testing. I apologize in advance for the glare in some of these.

Setting unloaded. This is actually a good bit of voltage for a 2k.

20140425_132922_zpsdrqgxkuw.jpg

First up is 5 ohms (resistive).

20140425_132439_zpsdct4qkye.jpg

That's 480w @ 5ohms and 13.5v with 73% efficiency.

Next is 2.5 ohms (resistive).

20140425_133200_zpstohqycee.jpg

That's 950w at 2.5ohms and 14v with 72% efficiency.

Here's 1 ohm resistive.

20140425_133531_zpsqyp6qodw.jpg

That's 1,420w at 1 ohm and 13v with a whopping 62% efficiency. Yikes. That's indicative of a class A/B amp. This pull got past my alt at idle so voltage dropped to 13v. This would be much worse on on most people's system who would be running this amp.

To give this amp every chance to make clean power, I adjusted the volume for each pull so that it remained clean. I don't usually do that (or need to). But in case you're wondering why I did that or what it would look like if I didn't do that, here you go...

20140425_133841_zpsubwhwbj2.jpg

That's 1,680w at 1 ohm and 13v and efficiency drops even further to ~ 60%. You don't need to be an expert to see that the wave is pretty squared off there. The problem here is that this is what you would get if you had set the amp at max clean unloaded. The amp just doesn't have the ass to stay clean.

Curious what the amp does at battery voltages after it gets past an OEM alt?

20140425_133557_zpsi23igjov.jpg

It just gets uglier and uglier. Although... efficiency didn't get any worse. Your coils would be pissed here. Even though most of the people running amps like this have Zv.4's or Lvl5's for some reason.

In case you missed it, here are the in-car comparison measurements with some comparably sized amps. I used max SPL and an SMD AMM-1 in dyno mode here.

Digital Designs M2b
-1.4 - 656w - 142.6db
-.35 - 1,922w - 146.7db

Rockford Fosgate 1500bd
-1.4 - 671w - 143.1db
-.35 - 1,801w - 146.1db

Sonido Mask 2000
-1.4 - 345w - 140.9db
-.35 - 1,392w - 145.3db

Prototype "1200"
-1.4 - 279w - 141.1db
-.35 - 1,150w - 145.0db

This is the part where I usually give my personal thoughts on the amp being tested. Due to the recent events surrounding this amp and the person selling them and his tactics to do so, I am withholding my personal opinion of the amp and I will let the testing and numbers do the talking.

You can be the judge.

Lol I have seen more than a couple people say this amp is awesome. Guess the numbers speak for themselves

750??! Yeah, fuck that. Fuck this website, fuck SMD, fuck Steve, fuck all of his butt buddy mods, and their couches.

TFade is my hero

Thanks alaskanzx5 I might just do that
I can recone a sub myself. About a year ago I took 2 12" power acoustic mofos and made one sub. I took the magnet and the motor off of one and j b welded it to the other motor and magnet. I had to wind my own voice coil so it would work. After I was done hooked up to 2 boss 5000w amps. And shattered my back and all my side windows

came to this thread to recommend soundqubed and ct sounds. OP goes with soundstream.

oh lawd.
