Can you drive a car for 24hrs with out a charging alternator?

Recommended Posts

I did a road trip from CO to ND a few years back in my Honda Accord and my alternator crapped out.

NOBODY had a replacement alt so I had to buy 3 batteries and run just on battery power.

These were plain stock lead-acid batts.

I needed all three batteries for the whole trip (~700mi) and drove mostly in the day. Once night came and I needed the headlights, the battery life dropped off quote a bit.

That was with no AC, no radio, no accessories at all.

So I'd guess that each battery gave me roughly ~250mi before the car started flaking out.

AGM batteries will be a bit better, but I wouldn't push it.

Make sure you're not going to get stranded anywhere.

I had 100mi desolate stretches of road that could have been trouble.

Good info... I still have 8 days before i leave for florida so i got a little more time to feel out the tenney. Like i said I JUST GOTTA MAKE IT TO FL. The dc 270 will be there.

I wouldnt evem try it. How far a trip is that

1532 miles nate. Stopping in Tallahassee at my uncles house. So 16 hrs from texas to florida in the day time. And another 9 hours down the west coast of florida also in the day time after a short nap.

i also have 100miles free towing. And all the tools in the world incase i need to swap shit on the side of the road.

I just try not to take chances, That drive isn't something to play with.

give tenney alt for scrap. buy stock alt for honda.

why even worry about that "aftermarket" alt catching on fire?

edit: drag it on a chain behind your car.

Why even chance it? Not trying to be a jerk at all, but saying you have tools and can bring (I assume) a working alternator with you and it only take a couple of hours to change maybe just does not make sense. What happens if it takes a dump and it is pouring down? Maybe a huge dust storm? Maybe 115 degrees with no shade plus the heat of the engine etc. Not even to get into forgetting a tool you need to do the job, breaking or stripping a bolt or whatever.

If you have to make the trip and you know the existing alternator is bad (not just a bad connection or other issue) then swap a good alternator on it now while you have plenty of time to fix anything else that might come up.

If it is a matter that you won't be able to jam the system the whole trip then that will be the sacrifice to make. At least you will make it there and back.

Oh believe me i hear you there. I JUST got off the phone with dad (my mechanic) and he said the same exact thing... LITERALLY word for word.

Im not too worried about not being able to hear the stereo. I just wanna get to florida and get my car up on dads lift. Its got 1500+ in parts that need to be changed and the dc270 will be there too.

Thanks for all the input guys. And the quick responses.

ill say it like i always say it. F##K the DD-1. I don't care if you or anyone buys one. (well i do, but that isn't my point) Get an O-scope in the very minimum and learn how to use it or you are just guessing your settings like every other noob. :) once you master the O-scope then step up to a DD-1 or even better a DD-1 Plus.
