Will a amp wired to 4 ohm still pull as much power as an amp wired at 1 ohm

interesting, so an amp that does 1200wrms at 4ohm 2ohm and 1ohm, should really put the same amount of strain on the electrical system no matter what impedance the amp see's....

Just like the topic title.

Example.

If I have a 1200 watt amp that does 800 watts a 4 ohms drawing lets say 80amps, then take same amp but wire at 1 ohm putting out 1200 watts. Would it still draw the same 80amp or would the amp draw be raised to say 100amps or so. Just an example so excuse the poor math if any lol.

To answer your question, the draw will change based on load. An amp that draws 80a at 4 ohm will draw more than 80 when you wire it down to 1.

This won't give you an exact number but if you're just looking for ballpark figures, think along these lines Voltage * amps = watts and to figure it in reverse watts/voltage = amps

It isn't anything you can take to the bank for many reasons (efficiency, duty cycle etc.), but it gives you an idea on how it works.

I think the question the OP is asking is this:

is 800 watts roughly the same amperage requirement at 800watts @1ohm vs. 800 watts @2ohms.

I've always wondered this.

If you had a 2.5 Korean board. That will do 2500 rms at 1ohm. But let's say you grab a 5k Korean board that does 2500rms at 2ohm, or a 7.5k Korean board that does 2.5k at 4ohm. How will they all strain your electrical system? Similar? Or is it truly better to have bigger amps running at higher ohm loads.

So who would spend the money for a 10k and run it at 4 ohms? Or any other amp,and not run it to what its capable of doing?

Depends on what it's being used for, there is more to an amp than just wattage.

That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.

those crazy SQ people do that kinda stuff. maybe not with 10k but they run amps at higher nominal loads to lower distortion and such.

Of course lower nominal means less efficiency, but I wonder if you ignore efficiency if the amperage requirement is close.
