Triticum Agricolam
I wouldn't call an EBP of 49.5 middle of the road, depending on who you ask some folks say anything below 50 is sealed-only territory. That being said, I agree it does look like it models fine in a ported box and I wouldn't be afraid to use it that way. 1.5 cubes at 32 Hz looks good to me. Broke_Audio_Addict
i'd be very anxious to see what sound you get with a ported enclosure... the t/s parameters do not lie... while manufacturers do. to sell more to the average buyer who thinks (insert name brand here) makes the best gear.We are talking about jl though and I doubt they want to put their reputation at stake by recommending the wrong enclosure for their subs. The jl made pre fabs are actually decent, the ho wedge actually sounds good (at least to me). That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals. Joe X
I figured JL would focus on sound quality, which is fine. I guess they think sealed will give you better sound quality? Either way, I'm always skeptical when a manufacture says sealed only when the T/S parameters say otherwise. The model shows quite a bit of group delay compared to other JL subs in ported, if anything this could reduce SQ a bit specially when using a higher box tuning, this is no big deal IMO unless you are all out on SQ. Other than that looks perfect unlike many other low EBP subs. I would go ahead and build it. Ported may not meet their criteria but may meet yours, makes an interesting test. CstrokerV
Any sub will sound like shit in a prefab box vs a custom box built built to spec. Including any jl sub. so you're an installer and know this as fact or at least ran several JL subs in several different pre-fab enclosures? i installed a wo v1 in a qlogic sealed box that was recommended airspace back in about 98 it sounded like poooooo not saying the higher models sound like poo my build http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/142505-small-build-log-4-dc-lvl3-10s-tl-update-link-to-rebuild/ http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/154258-rebuild-6-lvl3-12s-update-small-video-nothing-spectacular/ new build http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/188181-03-trailblazer-slow-build-8-dc-lvl3-12-m1-motor-m2-parts/
catch 22
Not what I meant. Was tryin to say, you can't just throw any sub in any prefab and expect it to sound good. From my experience all prefabs sound like poo
catch 22
The jl specific enclosures I've heard sounded pretty good. This is different from a prefab
