I'm fairly sure the Singer Alt does have a slightly smaller pulley than the stock. Orginally I had planned to use a smaller belt but then decided to try to use the stock one first and it fit pretty well, but with all of these problems I'm sure a smaller belt should be the solution. I think I'm going to try and fit a 37' belt on there and just work my way up in length until I find a nice snug fit. Also, the soonest I could probably work on it would be Friday with Thanksgiving work and school all this week, do you guys think the belt should hold up fine for a couple of days, I would really hate to end up stranded.

Does it slip on start up or only when you have the system on? Or is it only when system is full tilt. Make sure when u our getting belts you have them check to see how long they our under tension not loose cause that makes a Difference. Goto a legitimate auto parts store like Napa or carquest because most places look at you puzzled when u ask them for a shorter belt.

Sorry to thread Jack but how long does a belt typically last on a high output alternator because mine is starting to slip as well. And our there any belts that stretch out less then others?

I buy my belts online. Saved me money

Last I paid was $13 shipped for a gatorback that cost $30 at auto zone. What I did was check the stock belt size and got an inch shorter. go to Goodyear website and get the part number to the closet measurement you need. Then use That part number to search the web

Stupid spell check

sounds like belt slip. i had to take away power steering and add an idler pulley for the second alternator to make enough belt wrap. my current belt is a gates and it has lasted more than 10k miles. I keep a backup and the required wrench in my trunk just in case.

Cables and wires almost never fail; the terminations do.

sounds like your idle problem is because its a 320 and those suck at idle, the alterntor is reaching its turn on speed and thats why you go from battery voltage to charging voltage back and forth. your car idle must be too low and is not turning on. the squeeling at higher rpms is from belt not being tight enough.

try a better/tighter belt and see if that solves all issues. you may need to down grade to a 240 small case hairpin to get better idle output
