vw0404 Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 hey everyone !!! can anyone describe the smell when your pushing the subs alil to hard and second ? if you underpowered the subs could you play longer with out them getting to hot? thanks everybody!
Irocthestreetz Posted January 21, 2016 Report Posted January 21, 2016 What amp do you have with what sub? Overpowering really shouldn't be making them smelly, clipping will definitely do it tho. The best way to describe it is just a very hot smell.
Hotdog Posted January 21, 2016 Report Posted January 21, 2016 If you are smelling it, then that is what it smells like. I always though it smelled like your burning a clutch up. but not many people now days know that smell either because they never drive stick shift. MotorCityFats13 Posted January 21, 2016 Report Posted January 21, 2016 the first few seconds it smells like bandaids right out of a new box.... I imagine its the adhesives starting to heat up if you go over this smell the sub is probably toast and that smell is just melted plastic and electrical fire aromas.... when I had my 2004 cobra I raced a SVT focus... the kid thought he was driving a real SVT car.... so I did a full stop light to light race from 4th gear and he still never passed me but the whole car smelled like clutch for 3 days... and it in my opinion smelled nothing like subs! lol

The best way to describe it is just a very hot smell. Even without clipping you can get them to smell. More power=more heat. That's why subs have a rating. It's not like you can throw 5k clean watts on a 100watt sub my logshttp://www.stevemead...-my-new-set-up/my blow through loghttp://www.stevemead...future-updates/ 96 ss http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/164094-96-impala-ss-build/

It's not like you can throw 5k clean watts on a 100watt sub Sorry, thought that was a given. But you can get away with 500wrms give or take depending on your woofer. I've had a 2300wrms amp on a soundqubed hdc315 rated for 1500wrms for 4 months now and even with some clipping the coil is still minty.
reedal Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 You THINK you've had 2300 going to that sub. Reality, less than 1300 probably SMD Tool Map https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/193176-smd-tool-map-new-november-2014/ Build log https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/197217-reeds-03-tahoe-hat-sqaq-singer-xs-shca-cockbox-80prs/?page=32
reedal Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 Power ratings are given for a reason. Can you give speakers and subs more? Yes. Will they live as long as being overpowered as compared to a non overpowered sub? No. How do you give a sub it's rated RMS? Buy an amp that puts out your subs RMS at one to two ohms higher than what you're wired to. OP: you asked about under powering. Yes, if underpowered, subs will live longer. But you can't just under power a sub but feed it a dirty clipped signal (which is probably why you're getting a smell if that is what started your questions). The best way to describe it is just a very hot smell. Putting more power than what is recommended in most cases WILL make them smell. They are rated for a reason, whether it be the coils thermal handling or suspension stiffness. OP it generally smells like adhesives. When you buy a brand new sub, smell it near the coil and that is generally what overheating smells like, just when it overheats it is more pronounced. boom50cal Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 eh, if it's a tantric woofer, don't worry about it. fuckers always smell. it's just how they are. if you're tuned clean, and somewhere in the realm of proper power...don't even worry about it. but if it's some other kind of woofer. You've got tons of factors that can play in. Improper enclosure size, low port efficiency, too much power, distorted signal, low voltage causing clipping...list goes on On 1/4/2013 at 9:31 PM, HatersGonnaHate said: Wow. 184 posts and I think you're a fucking asshole.
