Bayuk89 Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 I bought 25ft spool of execution audio 12Ga CCA speaker wire on ebay for $13 and recieved it today. Un winding the spool i noticed after about 4 feet there was a defect in the jacket (for about 1/8 of an inch) and the wire was exposed. I also noticed some very faint white/greenish powder residue in the wire. So i cut it there an inch before and after the defect and inspected it. The wires have a very light powder through out the strands. Is this normal for CCA wire ? I hate wasting money even $13 so if its not safe to use it i wont. I hoping to get some feed back or experience on this... Its not much residue its pretty faint but i dont know if the rest of wire is infected (more or less) unless i OHM out my runs....
Broke_Audio_Addict Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 Sounds like you bought used wire. That being said a lot of people's definition of "music" is a clipped 30 hz sine wave with some 80 IQ knuckle head grunting about committing crimes and his genitals.
MotorCityFats13 Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 I cant see it being unsafe to use.... sounds like the copper clad started to oxidize hence the green color I bought some OFC speaker wire back in 1999 and it took 4 years to find out that it was probably not OFC because all the strands turned green right to the core and started losing signal, I had to then take it out and replace it.... all it was going to was my tweeters and I started to hear them cutting out at low volume.... personaly I would avoid using it unless its for something with very easy access / short runs
cgrez33 Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 One time one of my amps had burned out and I checked the wire and it was corroded about 6" never again am I using CCA. Current Build: 1999 Tahoe #ComingSoon Previous Build(s): Crossfire Magnum 5k Pontiac G6 GT

I am going to switch to tinned OFC anytime i buy wire anymore. Rest in peace, walled 87 accord build log 03' Corolla build with AA Mayhem inside. Skullz Posted March 30, 2016 Report Posted March 30, 2016 Most metals oxidize, so going to cca won't help you, you have to tin and seal the wire to reduce any chance you'll get oxidation. 01 Ford focus ZX3 Pioneer AVH-X491BHS PPI PC 4800.2 Morel Maximo 6.5" x2
Bayuk89 Posted March 30, 2016 Author Report Posted March 30, 2016 It was a brand new roll all factory packaged on a spool, prolly old sitting in a warehouse. Im gonna set it off to the side, i have a new oppurtunity. Ive ran scocshe 14ga from walmart and never had any quailty problems, figured this wire would be better quailty but no lol.
Bayuk89 Posted March 31, 2016 Author Report Posted March 31, 2016 Its faint white powder (highly doubt the manufacture drop a kilo on the wire before insulation) the actual wiring looks fine. But im gonna set it aside on the shelf because i dont like "what ifs" Thank you guys for your input i appricate it.
ShadeTreeMechanic Posted March 31, 2016 Report Posted March 31, 2016 Even OFC will do this. Marine wire is tinned to prevent this. This is also why adhesive lined heat shrink should be used on terminals under hood and under car. Maybe you could contact the seller and let them know that this is unacceptable and give them the opportunity to make it right. 91 C350 Centurion conversion ( Four Door One Ton Bronco) 250A Alternator (Second Alternator Coming Soon) G65 AGM Up Front / Two G31 AGM in Back Pioneer 80PRS CT Sounds AT125.2 / CT Sounds 6.5 Strato Pro component Front Stage CT Sounds AT125.2 / Lanzar Pro 8" coax w/compression horn tweeter Rear Fill FSD 5000D 1/2 ohm (SoundQubed 7k Coming Soon) Two HDS315 Four Qubes Each 34hz (Two HDC3.118 and New Box Coming Soon)
