Subs start the smell

Hey guys, 

My buddys subs start to stink when played full tilt for a short while. He's trying to find out y. He has verified they have a clean signal (amp set with dd-1). Ohm load at amp is 1 ohm ( 4 sa 15s on a CT sounds 3k). Wall is 18 cuft tuned to either 32 or 26 Hz via adjustable port..

Just because the gain is set with DD-1 doesn't mean the music is clean or that the overlap he set it was is the same overlap of the music. You know which track he used for the DD-1? If he set the gain using the -10dB track, but the music has the bass recorded at -5dB, then he will be clipping the signal going to the subs.

Gain was set with the -5 db track and the music is mostly got160s. I've got a fairly good idea of what I'm doing but can not for the life of me find this smell.

Got160s and other rebassed music may be imprinted with a frequency that doesn't have any attenuation.  

 

It could also just be that the subs are still fairly new and you're just smelling the coil heating up the glue. Do the dust caps feel warm when the smell becomes noticeable?

Maybe subs are wired wrong. I'd take the subs out of the box and check the wiring to make sure the positive and negative wires are connected correctly.

Did you feel the subs? Are they warm? Hot? Cook an egg on the cap?

Could be the amp your smelling.

Make sure youve got good wire going in, I recently ruined a alpine type r 12 by using shitty wire. make sure youre using true-to-size wire. are the subs d4 or d2 or d1?

They are barely warm. They arnt that new but I've played them plenty so it shouldn't be that that they are new. It's happened before and it went away and now it's happening again

All sky high wire. 8 gauge speaker wire and 1/0 power. It's 4 d2 sa 15s wired in series on each sub up to 4 ohm then all 4 wired parallel down to 1 ohm at the amp.

Amp is in the trunk and the car is walled and completely sealed so I don't think it's the amp.

Am I the only one who sees and issue of the box size for one? 18 cubes for 4 SA 15's?

Also, if you set it with the -5dB track, you can still easily clip if you play anything above -5dB. Setting it with a DD-1 wont do anything for you if you dont understand what you are setting it to. 

 

Also, big thing... are they heating up fast on a particular song? (particular frequency)? 

 

SA's are know to be able to take 1000w pretty much all day long, so if you are heating them up enough to smell them , it would lead me to believe that he is clipping them pretty good at full tilt, so songs are probably above -5dB.
