Am I The Only One That Likes Sealed Boxes?

Recommended Posts

soooo.... i dont understand. is what i said right or did i just make myself sound really stupid?

Yes, when playing a frequency below the box tuning, you will bottom the subs out. (If volume's loud enough).

air forces plays at about 41 so you should be dead on if you are tuned from 35-38, maybe you are just a liitle small on air space. my box is tuned to 37 and i kill most of jeezys shit....gorrilla zoe has some stuff that is a little low for me, next build=28-32hz

i dont remember exactly what it was but i believe it was tuned to about 48hz (45-50ish) i hated the sound, it didnt sound good at all. it sounded so much better with my two 12" tuned to 34 hz.

edit: and my sig isnt right, that was with a 3 3/4 port. was a lot of port noise so i put a slot port in it thinkin it would be better to tune it higher. i was wrong

I mostly see people use sealed boxes if they have little room and dont care about looking to get loud. In my friends Explore he had a small sealed box that he had metered a 139 on the ac with 2 15" CVR's. I had built him a good ported box, 4 cubes each sub and he did a 147.3 after that. Was a huge difference.

I ran 2 CVR 15's-sealed, then changed to 4 CVR 12's sealed. 146.3 TL windows down 1/2way, mic in the kick is my best burp to date.

It COULD be louder but at what expense? SQ?...prolly. AIRSPACE? for SURE.

I will be trying some ported boxes in my next builds But I will also put the same subs (not cvr's) in sealed setups and choose my preference. I have always "had enough output" from my sealed setups and I'm kinda partial to nice tight bass rather than sloppier ported or bandpass designs (from what I've heard and built) but I have a feeling unless I can get the same tightness out of a MUCH louder ported setup, it would not be worth the change.

on the real, ported boxes are louder. If you know what you are doing and don't get too big a hump in the freq graph when you are designing it you will have a great all around sounding box that is louder and plays lower than a sealed box. If you are real peaky in the graph you will play those freq's very well but everything else will sound like ass in comparison. I like to tune ported boxes to around 32'ish Hz unless going for straight SPL then somewhere in the high 30's to low 40's.

Yeah I learned from when I had my box tuned high. So now for music I tune nice and deep. It sounds good anyways and rumbles real loud on the lows and moves a crap load of air.
