Otherwise only and idiot would get bit by that thing. I would hope you can hear that big of snake rattle. Now that I look at the picture, the snake is closer to us while the guy is further back, I would say its probably 7ft. A rattlesnake can only unhinge its jaw to accept something 25-35% bigger than its mouth. Most boas/pythons can accept food up to 200% larger than its mouth depending on size. trainman0978 Posted October 21, 2009 Report Share Posted October 21, 2009 Dude needs to change the title. It wasn't 15 feet. It was slightly over the southern average of around 6 feet. We have rattlesnake round ups in south georgia which are like carnivals, people go out and catch snakes and they milk the venom out of them to make anti-venom for hospitals and such. This is a large snake , YES. is it really uncommon in a residential area? ABSOLUTELY ! However, development is forcing these snakes to take greater chances to find food. You wouldnt normally see a rattler in a civilized area, so odds are , he was extremely hungry. A copper head or a cottonmouth would be a more typical find, and both of those are way more aggressive than a rattler is. And this snake is not that old, and has had good luck surviving on the food in his area, he didn't have a lot of rattlers which usually indicates that he wasnt that old. And in any area in the south, you run the risk of snakes. They are native to the area. And more and more developments are popping up along stretches of highway that have remained undeveloped and basically managed forest or old growth forest. Snake sightings in these places will be a common thing for several decades. Hell the development I live in was a hunting club a few years ago. The main road into the community is the main road into a area of at least twenty thousand acres of pine forest. I am sure there are bound to be a few big snakes around here somewhere. Most of south Georgia and Northern Florida is still hugely undeveloped. Growing quickly , yes, but there are alot places where there is nothing but woods for miles and miles.
