Audio Shop Guy

Recommended Posts

Ok so I took a little trip to a town where they have a few audio shops. The buddy was looking to get some new subs to go along with his new kenwood amp and alpine head-unit. We get there and I've been in there before, so the guy recognizes me right away. I tell him my friend is lookin to buy some new subs to go with his supplies. So he takes us into the woofer room and shows us a couple kenwood subs and some low class JL subs. I asked the guy if he happend to have any RF stuff. And he took me into another room and showed me the new shipment that had came in that day. So I walk into the room to find P1s, P2's, P3's, T1's, and T2's ALL brand new and pretty as can be! The friend is on a budget so he settles with two 12" P2's in a sealed box. Not a bad first system (well second system--he bought an old school infinity that shit the bed when he hooked up his new amp to it). But, the P2's sound decent in his '89 grand prix. Anyway, I start talkin with the guy about the boxes he builds. He tells me that if my friend wanted to switch to a ported box, we could do so. I told the guy that the box should be tuned to about 32-36 hz. He gave me a look as if I was the stupidest person in the world. "Thats WAY to low," He told me. He further explained the the lowest he tunes his boxes are about 55-60hz--even for 15's-- and that's what he sells to the public because that's what sounds the best to him. We got into a little arguement over this, which ended in me saying that he was right (I was soooo tired of argueing).

I dont know how the guy can continue to sell boxes with them tuned so high.

Anyway, just thougt I'd share the little story with you guys.

i tune mine from 32-36 myself so i would say hes wrong. A ported box tuned to 50 would sound like dogshit to me. ESPECIALLY 60hz LOL.

Ok here is what you do. First go back to the store and ask for the same guy and as soon as he comes out, take one of his 55-60hz ported boxes and proceed to beat the shit out of him.

Second step, when he regaines conciousness proceed to beat the shit out of him again with the same said box.

That should do the trick nicely.

the only time I ever hear anything in that range of tuning sounding descent is in bandpass boxes. I was skepticle at first, but when I worked for that speaker company, my boss had me do a Kove 15" in a friends car. The car came with a 9" sub in the rear deck, so I went by his designs, and did a 6" pvc port tuned to 55-56hz Since it is bandpass, it peaks at 55, but played pretty flat to about 28ish hz out of car. In car, mic'd RTA'd it was extremly flat from 20-80hz, just clean sound, played good with ALL music, not just rap. That is when I learned about Transfer function- the difference between out of car response, and in car response. BUT a ported box, tuned at 55hz, yeah, sounds like ass, because there is phase issues between cone/port, but bandpass, it all relies on port, and pressure in the box. Yeah that guy was wrong, about the ported boxes tuned so high for daily customers, but bandpass, I would have agreed.

my opinion on that

I have a ritual called "terminator". I crouch in the shower in the "naked terminator" pose. With eyes closed I crouch for a minute and visualize either Arnie or the guy from the 2nd movie. I then start to hum the T2 theme. Slowly I rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me get through my day. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It sorta ruins the fantasy.

^^^^ no idea what you just said....

you oughta write up a tutorial on proper bandpass design tho!! I think that'd be real helpful.

To add my own $.02 to this thread, I was talking to a local shop owner about designing boxes, and he said he didn't even really know how to design a tuned box! He just said he had always done what sounded best, and had kinda got it to a point where it sounded good over the years. I have no idea where his boxes are actually tuned though.

A couple links to some box builds:

Tahoe Box 1, Tahoe Box 2, Nissan Titan, VW GTI,

Mini-Bump, Hummer H2, Ford F-150

My own car builds (current setup --- under construction):

Overall Thread, Kickpods, Dash, Back Doors

Subwoofer Wall
