SPL KID
A buddy and I got into a debate on this topic. There was a guy doing 170's on 1 dd 10 inch sub. Then there Dante doing 180's off 1 18 inch sub. Which bout up the discussion since most multiple woofer setups rarely crest 170 unless there low quantities. What you guys take on this? Okay Dante was doing 179's with a single 10 but also....the first person to break the 180 mark was Scott Owens using 13 12s....that not exactly a low quantity of subs. HHR Ed
In extreme cars cone area really doesnt matter. And There are 3 or 4 cars doing over 180 with more than 5 woofers and only 2 cars doing it with 2 or less subs. LoudBlazer
I know ppl like numbers but those cars cant play music! Werent radios made to play music? Also I like how multiple woofers sound, most of the tiem they have a deeper sound. I prefer multiple subs! 1997 2 Door Blazer Bagged & Body Dropped SBC/TH350
HHR Ed
The title question doesnt make sense. It says sub qty vs port area. More subs can be better so that a certain amount of power can be spread over multiple voice coils. But each car's interior will work best with a certain cone area. And extreme car's cabins are designed to work with a given cone area. And in the design, the port area is designed to match that given cone area. SPL KID
more or less the question posed is to go with more cone area OR depend more on port area sacrificing the space that could be used for cone area. Since there are really successful guys withe larger then standard port area to the woofer size. HHR Ed
Well the port area goes hand in hand with cone area. The more cone area you have, the more port area you should have. There is an ideal setup for every cabin design, and the formula of cone area to port area for SPL should be 1 to 1 or close to that in most cases. So to deviate from that formula would yield less than an ideal setup. So if you are asking if it is good or bad to add more subs and shrink that port to fit more cone, than I would say it will be bad because you will not have a perfect enclosure setup for that particular cabin. You can have too much cone area as well as not having enough. It all depends on the car and cabin design.
