      Because they're afraid to tell the truth, so they stay vague

      I would go with this one^. Sometimes when people don't feel their answer is good enough or justified, they give you the "just because" since they don't want to look bad for throwing away such a long relationship over "nothing" essentially. Sometimes people just fall out of love. I'm dealing with that now, on my level not hers.
