why did it blow

Recommended Posts

Today I blew one of my mojo 12"s. When i took it to the car shop and asked why it blew they said it was because I played it with the hatch open and that by doing this it gave my sub to much airspace and caused the sub to blow (coil detached). Could the hatch being opened actually have caused this or are the car shop guys not telling me something?

I have

2 memphis mojo 12" (i think they are dual 4ohm)

1 digital designs m3a Amp

I've heard that this is actually possible. If you open it up too suddenly, it can mess up the sub. Not sure if it's enough to blow it or not though.

Bassless once again. Can't seem to keep a system for more than a few weeks :)

Saving for a '06 Nissan 350z, look for build around June 2012.

you prolly were just clipping the fuck outta it, ive never seen one get wrecked from opening a hatch though

i had an issue like this once except it wasnt clipping, or bottoming out.. it tore my former right from the spider.. it was a dc level 4.. dunno how it happened.. it was well within box specs on rated power, who knows.

I would say clipping. It sounds very unlikely that opening the hatch would mess with the subs.

Yes, opening the hatch can damage woofers.

Depends on your enclosure and car, but the enclosure and car work together, and when you change the airspace on one of those, you totally change how it is tuned and plays.

Most of the time, opening a hatch or trunk releases any possibly back pressure on the woofer cone that would normally help control woofer excursion.

Box tuning gets raised, and if you play a low note at any decently high power setting, it can damage the woofers.

Why do you think it sounds different when you open the hatch?

Bingo

Unloading is likely the reason if you have been fine for a long time, then this one time your railing on it and opened the hatch. If your woofers are close to the hatch wall, its pretty likely the reason too.

LOTS of variables as to why it blew though. M3 can make some big power.

does that affect the woofer in the same way if it is facing the front of the vehicle and sealed off at the trunk, i dont particularly care to open my trunk when playing, especially since the woofer wouldnt be able to be seen form the trunk anyways, but not sure if it would affect it or not

Yes it does affect it, but maybe not as severely or in the same manner.

Some SPL burp cars will walls can blow woofers if playing at full with the front doors open.
