FWIW, I think you should remain stock.

Until you do some research and actually understand what you are doing, I would recommend you stay stock, unless you want to fuck your phone up beyond repair.

Just realize that if you DO fuck it up when rooting, that does void your warranty, and Verizon will basically just tell you that you're shit out of luck until you can get an upgrade, or pay $600 full retail for a new phone.

x2 man google, look up some vids and click right HERE before doing anything that you might regret, if done wrong, to your phone.

yeah like they said...if you're this unfamiliar with doing something like this, either leave it stock or go to a forum specialized in that stuff instead of a car audio forum to get the proper information that you need. XDA is a badass place when it comes to that stuff

I've been hacking and modding Android and Windows phones for about 3 years now, but as stated above, go to the forums and read. Read again, and keep reading. Just go to XDA Developers, select your phone and read all the tutorials in the "General" section and "Droid X Android Development" section. Once you read them all and try it once or twice, flashing/modding/rooting/hacking becomes pretty easy.

No substitute for extensive googling :)

On my phone, samsung fascinate, I can hack away and the worst you can do is soft-brick it, I can hook up USB and push a clean image on the phone no problem. I did that so I could do the OTA update to Froyo... Then I rooted it again. :drink40:

BTW Rooting is just getting "administrator" privileges to your phone, nothing more. After you root, you have complete control over your phone.

It's just like with your PC, if you have a basic user account you can't do much like install programs or hardware... you need admin access to do stuff like that. They use that so you can't do stuff with your phone that they want to charge you for, like tethering to your laptop. Verizon wants to charge you $20 a month or so just for that when the phone is fully capable of it without the fee.

EDIT: Also I have a coworker that has both Windows and Android on his phone. He can boot to either... so DIFFERENT OSes are possible, not just different android kernels.

A friend of mine rooted his DroidX and hated it.

Caused more problems than it was worth. He has an iOS look-a-like and it froze all the time.

But, yes, Android is based off of a Linux Kernel. Thus, "ROOTING" is the term given to jail-breaking it. A ROOT user in Linux terms is the highest level of administrator.

You especially need to be careful as a root user on a phone because you do have the capability to accidently delete portions of the phones OS.

you mean rooting it/

maybe i'm not real sure. I guess like jailbreak for the iphone. I'm not to sure what it's called. I seen people talking about changing up the system or something like that, not running the stock settings.

You can root the phone and load different roms and kernels onto it. Enabling things like free tethering and other goodies...

Pretty simple to do... check out XDA forums
