I dont know if I read wrong or what but did you say they had the speakers hooked up while setting the gain?

I don't even know what they did, the more I think about it, it doesn't really add up. Maybe he spent money he didn't really have. I will hook it up in the morning.

I remember when I tried to DD-1 my 9k with the subs connected I got that same noise and the DD-1 showed distortion with little gain. Not saying thats the problem but from what you stated in the first post thats what it sounds like. If you could ask them if they had the speakers hooked up or not.Worth a shot to eliminate another possible problem

Guys, if you have first-run DD-1's you have to watch, there is a diode in them that can pop and cause bad readings.

OrionStang - No subs on output means no load. No load means VERY LITTLE power draw (ohms law). Crank it up as far as you want, it will just amplify the wave form of the input source and give you the resultant output waveform, which is what the DD-1 looks for. The clipping you will find will either be headunit clipping (song/tone or RCA preouts) if it comes near max gain, or amp output stage if it pops up at near minimum to possibly medium gain.

If nothing clips or only near max then everything is likely fine. Could be something as simple as a bad head unit ground in the buyers setup causing "alternator whine" that may or may not have been even audible.

MickyMcD - "Capable of making some serious trouser flapping volumes at where's-my-testicles frequencies, the Servo-Drives used to be fairly jaw dropping..."

Any time you have have a power wire next to your frame put some rubber hosing (or cut up an innertube) around it. The wire is bound to wiggle (due to driving or flex) and the casing will eventually wear through.

I'm surprised Chode hasn't chimed in yet.Seems weird he was there and didn't know to unplug the speaker inputs while testing.Have you talked to him since this happened?
